I've managed to find a car which I can make monthly payments (and afford) on for my first car. It just so happens that I can afford my favorite car also...

1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL
5 speed standard transmission
Front-wheel drive
3.0L V6

I just hope that it doesn't become too much of a police magnet in my area and that insurance won't cost too much more than a more conventional car would. It is from a dealer.

I'll likely pay $500 per month for 10 months. With my current situation, I am not paying any bills, and finding a job in my area for me has been quite easy the past two summers.

Call the insurance company and give them the VIN, they can tell you exactly what it is going to cost.

Your insurance should not be high with the 3.0L engine. It is these big ones that really cost. I had a Mustang a few years ago with a 3.7L and the insurance was the normal rate.

Do young drivers not get penalised on insurance in the US? In the UK, if I bought the car OP is wanting, I would have been paying close to, if not, £2,000 a year for a car with something like a 3.0L engine.

My friend had one of those (actually like 2-3 one w/turbo, that was a trip). It'll move, that's for sure. Insurance might be a little high, but it'll go down over time if you don't have any accidents.

Im jealous, I admit as my first/current car is a beat up 94 accord w/ 200K+ miles. lol.

I was going to echo Harry's thoughts with regards the insurance especially with you being so young and probably only just passed your test, mind you I don't know what the position is in the States when it comes to age and driving.

Yes. And with that, the fact that it's ONLY a 3.0 means little. They still consider it a "sports" car with a V6! Insurance is going to love him (and worry at the same time)

Yes there is an age penalty for young drivers in the USA. I was just pointing out that you probably wouldn't get hit for having a big engine also.

But he IS going to get hit for having a sports car with a V6 - meaning he's not going to save much because he doesn't have a V8.

Just be careful, and DO make sure you have insurance. I have a real horror story for a friend of mine who didn't get insurance on his new car

Yeah, nice looking ride.
And yes, insurance sucks at a young age. My first car was a Camaro(V8).....was not cheap.
But, you'll only be a cop magnet if you give them a reason. As long as you don't do anything dumb, you won't have problems. I never did, and back when I got my license, V* sports cars were a big thing, but I never had a problem with cops( although, it's mostly cuz I didn't get caught).
