First Patch for Windows 7 SP1 RTM Will Fix Critical Vulnerability

What I don't understand is why people can't grasp that software gets updated all the time for all sorts of issues and reasons. This is the normal in the life of software. As someone once put it - if things were perfect we'd still be using version 1.0

And oh btw..... cough cough.... Microsoft isn't the ONLY software company to update/patch it's products ;)

Anyway I'm not surprised to see updates coming our way; business as usual.

How many updates make a service pack? That is to say how many grains of rice make a 'pile'?

You have one grain, a couple or a pair of grains, a few, but how many do you need to make a 'pile'?

Call it an update, a hotfix or call it a service pack - just make my pc secure!

Yeah, there's only one way to go about it. With all of the different hardware configurations and then the tinkering around and the installations of programs that can't all be tested by Microsoft to ensure that they'll integrate perfectly into the OS, the only way to do it is to roll out updates as they come along. To restate, there's a lot of frickin code and there are a lot of people who like to exploit that code for nefarious or even harmless reasons. I subscribe to a lot of exploit mailing lists, you'd be surprised at how many exploits roll through every day.

Software is not perfect. Never has been, never will be. If it's made by man, it's going to have issues. Getting them fixed is more important to me than getting it absolutely perfect on day 1. Every OS that I've ever used, has patches. This includes Windows, OSX, Linux, Unix, Solaris, etc.

Of course to be fair, with Linux, you are updating the OS with the latest security fixes, as well as software upgrades, documentation changes and such for almost every single piece of software also installed on the box too. So, it's getting updates for Firefox, for Open Office, the GIMP, etc.

But nonetheless, running Linux can results in lots of updates depending especially on what type of distro you are running (Fedora=bleeding edge=tons of updates) (CentOS=enterprise stable=much smaller number of updates).

Well the truth is that cars do have hundreds of vulnerabilies in them and thousands of people a day do die in them :( Those damn rubber tires that lose grip of the road, got flat or explode for one... THe untrustworthy or incapable person controlling them for another.

So until they get cars perfect, don't ever expect software to be perfect (Since software is ALWAYS compared to cars for some reason) ;)

I just had a look at my list of installed updates and noticed the first one listed way down at the bottom under Microsoft Windows is (KB976902) installed on 11/20/2010? My install was done on 2/5/2011.
It was a clean install with integrated media, Windows 7 + SP1 x64 Home Premium. Anybody else seeing this update with that date?

Better Memory Usage Since the SP1 Patch Install

However I also installed two other updates today

1. ATI Radeon HD 4200 driver from MSFT Windows Update
2. Avast AIS

So I am not sure which update is giving my computers the better memory usage but I will take it and enjoy it.:D

I disagree. If you understand the idea behind probability, then you should be able to comprehend the nearly infinitesimal chances of discovering a bug in software. What matters more is the response time to address the bug once it's discovered and time to implement a solution.

Compared to Apple with OSX, Microsoft is doing an excellent job with posting updates very quickly.

No software is fault-free. I run Ubuntu on one of mine and I am constantly receiving fixes and updates for vulnerabilities.

Actually, after hearing all the hype about how wonderful and secure Linux code was compared to Microsoft "Winblows," I have been amazed at how many and how frequently these "fixes" appear.

Maybe the high profile of Windows vulnerabilities has far more to do with the size of its userbase than it does to poor programming.

I suspect that if Unix systems controlled 90% of the user market and Windows 3%, everyone would be whining about how p*** poor Unix was and "Why don't they make a system like Windows that doesn't get hacked nearly as often."

Wow, I am so overwhelmed by Win 7

Last year I decided to build myself another computer with everything based on 64 platform. Subsequently I installed Vista 64 Ultimate and gave the old computer to my young daughter w/ it running XP Pro. Because I was running Vista I opted last month to upgrade her OS to Win7. Because of certain feaures I decided I wanted (mainly to run XP programs under Win 7) I had to do a clean install of Win7 Ultimate. Everything went fine and she has been using it for over a month while I con't to reinstall programs. One of the main reasons I wanted to run under XP was for Acronis Backup 8; that in itself is another story as I can no longer download it from Acronis and the only copy I have is the recover CD copy; but anyways today I did a manual check for windows update. Lo and Behold, it says that SP1 is availible, evan tho it supposedly checked yesterday automatically. Anyways, after 1 and 1/2 hrs later and two previous failed attempts to download and install it:cry:, it finally says that it rebooting and configuring from the SP1 install. as I am on DSL,
have to be amazed at such speed from them for their updates; yes sarcasim at the highest level; as other programs do their updates in seconds. While typing it finally has come back up and SP1 is installed. Damn this is like going back to dialup. See that there is still 3 more updates availible, while they say that they are optional I would consider them to be necassary.
Got to love MS and their approach to doing business.:sarc:
