If your PC hangs on most programs and takes forever to close (as task manager is working overtime), check all automatic update services, especially Chrome's. I finally found this to be the culprit after having to reboot every so often to regain my speed, which after a while faltered.

Go to task manager (control/alt/delete/) & services, look for chrome updates, and Adobe, etc., right click, stop service. Some apps let you choose to update or not, but Adobe still is using memory in services for update even though, "do not update is enabled."

If you need the latest version of the above, you can manually update.

There are a lot of updates that are launched by Task Scheduler (%windir%\system32\taskschd.msc /s).
I delete the tasks of most of them or modify the recurrence. Don't need to look for updates at every boot.

Thanks to your post, I have found hidden in the task scheduler even worst offenders-- privacy snoopers or Telemetry. I will post a new thread.

Frankly, it can't be that much worse than using Google Chrome and having its service running in the background 24/7 :-)

:ditto:

Chrome loads on startup and spy everything you do, even if you not using the browser.

OK, chrome is risky as it is owned by Google, what would you recommend? I use multiple privacy/spam extensions to eliminate these mal-operations as much as possible.

I've tried Firefox over the years, and it just doesn't measure up to the speed of Chrome; Opera is out of the question due to its minimalist functions, and IE is too rigid and uninteresting.

About lonothankyou's remarks regarding running in the background when not used, this is not the case as I have checked the processes in Task manager, and there is nothing.

I use Firefox 64. On fist run is slower than Chrome because Chrome is already running. After first run, it opens at a blink of an eye.
I use 3 add on: Noscript, HTTPS everywhere and smart HTTPS.

OK will try Mozilla again.
You should add the Ghostery and Priv3+ extensions.
