When i try to play a flv video file or just go to the folder where it is located,after a while explorer.exe stops responding and i have to reboot my pc. I have deleted all my flv files with unlocker but i wonder if there is a way to avoid that. Any suggestions?

Explorer does not play any files, it is a file manager and the shell. What program are you using to play .flv files?

You can try this, it plays more or less everything and is self-contained, it does not normally require that you install extra codecs etc.

VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

If you are having problems with explorer itself, then check first whether you have any malware on your system;

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Download it and run a full scan. If it finds anything, post the log here.

It sounds like you installed a codec which is registered to read Flv files but is buggy.

Explorer does in fact read media files, pictures, audio, video etc. It doesn't PLAY them but it tries to open them to find out information like size, fps, thumbnails etc.

You can try uninstalling the codec or codec pack that you suspect might be the cause... ANd yeah, for playing a ton of off beat file types, VLC is a good program and installing it will not mess up explorer or any other WORKING codecs you might already have installed.

If strange things start happening on anything at all, then scan your system for malware immediately, before you do anything else. This might allow you to save the system.

If you have malware on your system, then it is more or less impossible to troubleshoot various things.

You already found malware on your system;

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/155213-folder-problem.html

and according to the log you posted you only ran a quick scan and did not remove the malware;

There is no point in trying to fix things once you have been infected like that, you will not normally be able to find the cause of the problem, and even if you can, there is no knowing what other damage has been done.

OK. That's good. Unfortunately, removing the malware does not automatically repair any damage it did. The only sensible option in such a case is to re-install your system.

Trying to troubleshoot the damage done by the malware can take a very long time and is rarely successful.

Uninstall all of the Matroska codecs, launch an elevated command prompt, and run "sfc /scannow". This should repair the corrupted .dll's explorer is using to display the flv thumbnails.

Usually this kind of Video can read by a Player such as KMPlayer,VLC Player,etc.
Avoid to install different codes that might potentially mess up the registry of Windows,
result a faulty for some audio/video files open correctly.

Are you still having the problem after you uninstalled the codecs even though the SFC scan didn't find anything wrong?

Well, we can't help you if you're not willing to go through all the troubleshooting steps. If there was no freezing before installation of the codecs and you're only getting it when explorer is trying to display or thumbnail the files that the codecs are used for, then odds become rather likely that is the problem.

Did you install PowerDVD or did it come pre-installed?

My suggestion is to uninstall the codecs, as stated earlier, and install a better codec package that won't cause corruptions.
