Hi Cstassen,

Im not sure the exact package name but you need to download and install the software and drivers for your laptop from the Sony website before the FN key is able to provide this functionality ;)

Thank you, but I don't know if that package exists - and if so, what the name of it is? Could anyone help??

hi mate,

im using a vaio too and i managed to get the fn keys working. My model is the FW21E and sony only provides 32 bit drivers, so i actually installed drivers from a different model, one that has 64 bit drivers and it works! What u need to install is Sony Shared Library, Sony/Notebook Utilities, VAIO Event Service, and i think Sony Firmware Extension Parser.

If ucan find those on their website ur set. But note, the order u install them is VERY important.

Take a look at this guide:

Hmm, that came a lot closer, but I still didn't manage to find the right packages. Given that I have windows 7, should I find a model that has 64bit drivers? Should the model be "as close as possible" to VGN-Z540? Anyone have a suggestion?

A side note if anyone bothers to answer: I now have windows 7, but can I then use 64 bit programs? How does the difference between 32 and 64 play in, is it a hardware or a software issue?

Well u havent made any reference to whether ur running 32 bit or 64 bit windows 7. If the later, then i would suggest u find another model close to yours with 64 bit drivers. I know that in my series of vaio, the hardware is similar in all vaio fw. Thats why the drivers installed successfully...

if u do find the the drivers, which im sure u will, then remember to extract the installers from the packages using Universal Extractor. Doing this bypasses the check to see if the drivers are for the right model (since they wont be).

Hope things work out!! Pm me if u need any help :)

To answer ur question, u can only use 64 bit programs only if ur running the 64 bit version of win7, otherwise no u cant. It is mainly an architecture difference in how the CPU handles data...thats all i know lol.

Okay, I have 32 bit. So how should I go about it now that my own model's drivers couldn't be installed?? (I tried following the page you showed me, but the first driver to be installed, Sony Shared..., couldn't be installed as it was only for Vista)???

Hmm it didnt work? Thats strange, did u extract the installer using Universal Extractor?

Ok, now I have talked to Sony. They say I need to install the shared library and the notebook utility pack. They didn't offer more support as I told them I had windows 7 (they then just said they don't support that).

I downloaded those two driver packs. Should I then 1) extract them with Universal Extractor and 2) do what?

Thanks!

Okay, I tried following that site, but it doesn't work - when I get to installing the shared library it says it is only compatible with Vista!

yeah it will say that because u havent extracted them, use that Uni Extractor i said. Once u extract you'll find the installer somewhere between all those files. Doubleclick and ur set.

ps. If they still dont install, then right click, run in compatibility for vista.

good luck!

DaRonRon, THANKS! I did everything from the beginning using the extracted setup files etcetc, and now I can control my lights again :) Only thing not working is the stamina/speed button, but I can live with that! (never really knew what the diff was anyways, only problem is that it can only do HDMI in speed motion, so if it is stuck in stamina i can't do that, but time will show)

So one more question - how do I get to configure the touchpad? I can no longer use if for scrolling by pressing the right side / bottom - anyone who knows how I can configure that? Do I need a driver?
