Folder properties when sharing over network

If I change the folder properties accessing a shared folder (say pictures) over my home network, will it alter the folder's properties on the drive on which it resides or just the folder on the machine I am using to access the folder?

I am accessing my pictures folder on my desktop from my laptop from the other side of my house. The pictures and videos folders are set to "general items", the customize tab of the properties on the folder is set to "general items" when I access it from the laptop. If I switch the pictures to "pictures" and videos to "videos" on the laptop, will it alter the folder in the desktop on which the folder resides?

Hope this is clear enough, Thanks for any help, I have a hard time with sharing and permissions.

If you are able to connect to the folder, either locally or over the network, and managed to change it, then it will or should be changed. I'm sure you are not referring to doing ith with different user profiles, right? Best way is to try it and find out

I guess I could always do that.....my back is out and I'm laying on a lounge chair and can't get up to walk across the house right now. haha (it's true)

I think it will just change the folder on the machine I am accessing the share from.

I just found out it's different accessing the folders over the "network" than using the "homegroup"

If I access the folder using the "homegroup" it has my desktop system's folder properties. If I do it over the "network" it does not.

I had no idea there was a difference. Apparently there IS a difference. I need to learn more about what other differences there are between the two....are there certain things a homegroup cannot do? Is this for non-7 machines to integrate into the mix.

Good hell, I have a lot to learn about networking.

If anyone has a good list of other differences between network and homegroup let me know.

W7 HomeGroup is mainly for cosmetic reasons in my opinnion, and that's how i have viewed it. Ipv6 on, Network Discovery on, and bob should be your uncle.

It may be a lot of "cosmetics" but it sure is handy. I like to have the folder properties duplicated. I'll have to play around a little. Thanks...

Caution: If you are at work or elsewhere and you absolutely do not want others to see you, make a habit of checking the Network Discover setting. Not sure if it's just me or my machine BUT i have at least half a dozen times, been caught with it ON without realising, when i have turned if OFF. I promised you, i have not set it to ON, but it is turned ON for some reason. Maybe something else triggered, but heck if i know.
