Folder-Subfolder & Permission

Admin/Mod: Sorry I don’t know which section to appropriately post this message..


I have a HDD powered by USB which is included in the router.


In the USB I created a Music folder which included many subfolders. In some of these subfolders I can create another sub-subfolders or Drag and Drop some music. However, in some subfolders, I CAN’T. I CAN’T even Delete the song. The computer has a pop-up that says: ”you need permission to perform this action”. Now in the Music folder I CAN’T create another subfolder! I’m the sole admin of this computer.



Could you pls tell me Why and show me How to be able to solve this problem. Thanks.

I Am not sure of the reason for this but i have had the same problem and this is what I did to fix it,

right click on your folder and go to properties
then click the security tab and click "Advanced"
It will open a new window and click the "Owner" tab
then click "edit" (you will need Admin Privileges)
Under the "Change owner to:" click your User Name.
Check the "Replace owner on sub-containers and objects" box
Then click OK, And Go to Permissions Tab
Click the username that u just created as the Owner and click "edit"
It will give you a list of permissions and just check the ones you want ( i use "full control")

And that should give you access.

When I click OK, the computer says "an error occurred while applying permission to.... "

I think it has something to do with "ownership". I did google and read on "ownership" but the problem persists. Does anyone in here bumped into the same problem? Thanks.

Did you try giving the administrators ownership then try the permissions.

after you click on the "advanced" Tab in properties it will take you to that new window, and you go to the Owner tab then click edit again and change your owner to "Administrators (Domain\Administrators)" That should give anyone who is an Admin on your system the permission to change the file permissions. If that don't work I'm not sure what to do next.

Thank you so much for your advice.
Unfortunately, first I don't have "administrator" name on the list. I saw my name-pc. I highlight it and click on check box, then Apply. But the computer says "error". Secondly, some folders I can open another Sub-subfolder.
Thirdly, if I plug the HDD into my laptop, it works just fine (no locking, or permission is needed.
In short, I think there's something not right my modem with the USB port. That USB port does not work correctly.

Did you create the folders on your laptop? My guess is you did and the ownership was applied to the user on the laptop. From your laptop:

1. Right click the folder you want to change permissions for
2. Properties
3. Security tab
4. Click Edit
5. Click Administrators
6. Put a tick in Full Control
7. Click OK
8. Click OK

Note: If the boxes are grayed out, you will need to do this from the folder that the current folder is a subfolder of. You may have to navigate up a few directories to find one where you can change the permissions.

Also, if you want all users to have access and full control, you can change the permissions by clicking the add button in Edit and adding Authenticated Users (just type Authenticated Users if Authenticated Users is not already in the list in edit; if it is in the list, you can just put a tick in Full Control for Authenticated Users).
