Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default

How to Reset All Folder View Settings to Default in Windows 7

   Information
This will show you how to reset all folder view settings and navigation pane width back to default for all folders and libraries in all folder templates in Windows 7.

   Note
The included folder view settings that will be set back to default will be all Group by, Sort by, Arrange by arrangement , Icon Size, or View arrangement settings. This will also reset all folder templates back to default unless you used "Apply to Folders" as below.

If Apply to Folders was used to set folder views and templates, then this tutorial will not reset them to default since "Apply to Folders" makes what you set the new default. Instead, you will need to use Reset Folders to be able to reset each folder template back to default.

Resetting all folder views to default will also auto arrange and align all icons on your desktop to the left side. If you have a lot of icons on your desktop and would wish to preserve their arrangement, then installing the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the free Desktop Restore program before doing this tutorial would be a good choice.

   Tip
If you only wanted to reset the folder views settings back to default for all folders with the same folder template instead, then see How to Reset the Folder View Settings for All Folders with the Same Folder Template in Windows 7 instead of this tutorial.

Here's How:

1. Click on the Download button below to download the file below.
Windows_7_Reset_All_Folders_To_Default_Folder_Views.bat

Download

2. Save the .bat file to your desktop.

3. Close all opened explorer windows first, then run the bat file.

4. If prompted, click on Run.
NOTE: If you like, you can stop getting the Run prompt by unblocking the downloaded .bat file.

5. You will now notice your screen flicker and a command prompt open as the explorer process is restarted.

6. When it's finished, you will see the Computer window open.

7. You can now delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn

Windows_7_Reset_All_Folders_To_Default_Folder_Views.bat: I downloaded that file in an attempt to reset the volume mixer's position, but it didn't work. It did, however, reset Windows Explorer's position. That is neat. I deleted it afterward, but later undid the delete operation. That is a handy tool. Now, is there a way that I can restore the volume mixer's default position?

This tool resets folder settings, which has nothing to do with the volume mixer.

Everything sets back to its default position, but for some reason Windows Photo Viewer does not. I dont know if its just something weird but I was wondering if there is a way to reset its position?

Hello awesomegamer75,

Usually a window will open in the same position that it was last closed at by default. You might see if placing Windows Photo Viewer where you want it to open, then close it to see if it opens there next. :)

Yes but I was wondering the file "Windows_7_Reset_All_Folders_To_Default_Folder_Views.bat" is supposed to put all default postitions back to those assigned windows on the OS, but I was wondering why won't do it for Windows Photo Viewer? and is there another way to fix or do it.

Windows Photo Viewer is a separate program, and is not an explorer process like a folder or Windows Explorer. :(

Did it open where you last closed it?

It took me a bit, but I found where the position is stored in Registry Editor.

I have updated the downloadable .bat file in the tutorial to now also include resetting the position Windows Photo Viewer opens back to default as well.

Please try the updated .bat to see how it works for you now. :)

Thank you very much.

It Worked, but I'm a little unsure about the positioning though, it equally spreads the position though the resolution on my monitor but not to the default it was originally at, that maybe because the resolution of my monitor or something else.

I mean it doesn't really matter, I'm just a little confused on that. Though I'm still very happy that now it's in the new .bat :D

You're most welcome.

Yeah, the default will center Windows Photo Viewer opened like that on your main display.

If you like, you could position Windows Photo Viewer how you like, close it, and export the Viewer registry key below as a .reg file. This way you can always merge the .reg file to reset Windows Photo Viewer to that custom position. :)

Hello awesomegamer75, :)

Unfortunately, the width of the navigation pane and Task Manager are not affected by the .bat file.

Luckily, the width of the navigation pane is a global setting, so setting it one window will apply to all for your account.

THANKS! Looking for this for a month

I was having issues with my windows explorer settings. Each folder would open up with wacky settings and not remmeber my configuration. I tried so many fixes on the web going into tools folder options apply to all folders, but it did not remember. Resetting folders was no assistance as well.

This has saved me from reformatting my computer and wasting an entire day of my life.
