Folder views question

Win 7 is doing this differently than Vista did and it has me stumped!

For example in my documents I have the folders set to be viewed at "medium icons" and when I open a subfolder they too show as medium icons. In Vista I had some folders like my company's main folder set to the normal medium icons and the subfolder set to "list". With Win7 if I change the subfolder to "list" view it also changes all my documents main folders to list view also. What I want is be able to have certain subfolders set to a different view layout without affecting the previous main folders view settings.

I know this is probably a simple setting that I have overlooked but I was able to do it in Vista without any issues at all since it saved my desired view for each seperate folder without changing anything else. Certain folder that have lots of folder in their subfolders are easier to view with the smaller icon settings of the "list" option. If anyone knows what I am overlooking here please school me...THANKS!

Hello Edilee,

What location do you have the Documents folder opened at?

If you have it opened in the "Documents Library", then this is normal since all included folders in a library share the same folder view.

If you have it opened at the C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents or Start Menu
Personal Folder" location, then each folder should open with it's own folder view settings instead. If not, then try resetting the folder views back to default to see if it will afterwards.

Ok I see what you are referring to. If I open the "documents" from my start menu it takes me to "documents libraries" and if I navigate to the C:/users location it opne the old one I am used to and liek you said I can change each folder and subfolders view.

Is my start meu "documents" selction suppose to open the libraries one or the /users one? Somehow I am thinking when I installed Win7 it did not open it in the library form and some how it magically changed at some point in time because I also have a section below documents that is "public documents" that was not there upon initial install. That section presented itself about a month ago and I am not sure if I did something to cause this or not...I would prefer the old tried and true documents folder appearing when I use the main menu shortcut, is there a way to change that?

Yes, the individual user folder buttons in the Start Menu will open to the Library location.

The Personal Folder in the Start Menu will open to the C:\Users\(user-name) location instead though. You can set this folder to Display as menu in the Customize Start Menu settings to make it easy to use for this.

OK that works best for me for getting to where I want to faster and having the folder views set to what I like them to be. They sure complicated this with the whole libraries thing. Thanks for your help Brink!
