Followed Clean Installtion Tut Using Upgrade Media Now Genuine Error!

Hello,

I've followed the Tutorial found here in order to install windows 7 on my machine. It was a used machine I purchased that was running windows XP. I then installed linux on it for a while, then wanted to upgrade to windows 7 so I used the tutorial and everything was working great. After a month of regular use/updates, I know see the following error message:

"You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. Go online and resolve now".

After clicking the go online link, some "validation" occurs, then I'm taken to a page asking to buy some licenses, and on the top it gives the following message:

Windows validation detected and repaired an activation exploit (used to prevent built-in Windows licensing components from operating properly). You must activate Windows in order to complete the repair process and be able to use the full functionality of Windows. Not to worry, we can help you with that.

How can I proceed in light of this? When I purchased the computer used the outside didn't come in good shape so I can't find the usual sticker with the windows XP license. Any help would be great!

I would think the XP license sticker is meaningless if you now have a Windows 7 installation.

Do you have a valid Windows 7 Product Key?

Did you install Windows 7 from a burned disc, a purchased OEM disc, a borrowed disc, a purchased retail disc, or???

I cannot recall hearing of those particular error messages. Is that "not to worry, we can help you with that" a verbatim quote? Sounds stilted and suspicious, offhand.

Was this a upgrade Windows 7 copy instead of a full version? If so, then see if using any one or the other options in the tutorial below instead may help.

hello. Yes this was done with an upgraded windows 7 license key and I followed option 3 in that tutorial.

strangely enough in the beginning where it says "Windows Product Key" and it shows you a partial key...that is not a piece of my key. I actually purchased a legitimate windows 7 upgrade CD from microsoft, and that is not it?

If that's not the product key number that came with the Windows 7 that you purchased, then use the tutorial below to change it to the correct one, and try activating again.

(sorry for the late response - I missed this until now)

The Key in the report is the Default Key - and can never be activated.
This is usually the result of neglecting to input a valid Key during the install - possibly because of clean-installing using an Upgrade, rather than Full license.

Assuming the proper Key is an Upgrade one, then it cannot be input now.
You should first rearm the grace period, and then do a repair install, this time inputting the Key at the proper time.

There also a couple of (unspported) hacks that may work - see this link...

... they may be worth trying before the repair install, as they will avoid having to update teh system again.

Not sure what good that is going to be - the installed Key (which is the only one that ANY keyfinder will/can show) is not a valid one for activation.
