Font Size

Is there a way to set just the font size without windows trying to enlarge everything? In windows xp selecting a bigger font size only affected window's fonts and icons. In windows 7 selecting a bigger font size zooms everything, including other applications like open office and opera that cannot handle it and look blurry. Am i the only one with this problem?

It depends on the application and how they want to react to DPI increases.
There may be options available in the applications to configure that.

Thanks for the response... I will check the applications, but not sure if that will solve the problem. Even ones where most of the stuff looks good like internet explorer still have elements on pages that look blurry when they are stretched. I wish there was a way to switch back to XP's way of handling DPI scaling. I don't want most things stretched, but would like fonts and icons to be larger in windows itself.

You might see if adjusting the font size setting for items in the Advanced Appearance Settings (step 7) may work for you.

Advanced Display Settings

Brink thanks for your reply. I tried adjusting the advanced display settings and that gets me a little closer to what i want, but still is more complex and not as nice as the font sizing that windows xp implemented. I made everything larger that was in the dropdown menu that had an option for sizing, but now some things are big, and others that didnt have options to adjust are small. Also some text doesnt fit in in its area, such as menus where the text is cut off because the text is bigger than the space the program alloted for it. I still think that Windows needs the ability to selectively turn off DPI scaling on a per program basis, as well as the option to have DPI scaling only apply to operating system icons, menus, and dialogs and not extend into applications.

Just lower the zoom level....IE automatically increases the zoom level of the paged based on the DPI. Going back to the horrible DPI method in Windows XP is not an option.

IE looks fairly good with DPI scaling, because the only things that look blurry are the images within the content. The two main programs that i have used so far that dont look good when the DPI is increased are open office and opera. I haven't had windows 7 for very long so I am sure there are many more. I never had a problem with raising the font size in XP, so i disagree that it was horrible.

Like I said IE is zoomed in. Bottom right corner is the control for the zoom level. And clearly Opera and OpenOffice are not built with DPI scaling in mind. What was in Windows XP is not true DPI.

With Opera, you set each font separately in Tools>Options>Preferences>Advanced>Fonts & Web Pages>Normal & Monospace Fonts.

Seekermeister.. thanks for the tip about Opera. The problems in opera extends beyond font size, because the tabs and dialogs themselves look blurry when DPI scaling is turned on. Logic Earth ... not sure what true dpi scaling entails, but I would suggest that whatever benefits it has are outweighed by not being able to turn it off for applications that don't support it.

I would recommend playing around some more with the various font sizes in advanced appearance settings as Brink recommended. For example, I think the font setting under "Icon" controls various things besides just Icons but don't make that one too big. Same with Tool Tip. I find increasing the font sizes of Icon, Tool Tip, and Menu just one or two increments to be helpful in improving the size/appearance of fonts in many different apps (especially Outlook). I prefer doing it that way to using the general DPI setting cause I think it gives better (sharper) results and seems to more selectively make the things I want larger without making everything larger.
