For all users having problems starting UPGRADE

For machine(s) you are trying to upgrade:

1) Perform a Windows Update
2) Use full scan setting of Malwarebytes to check that the machine is malware free
3) Disable all 3rd party firewalls and/or antivirus utilites running
4) Close all applications currently running. No browsers. No media players. Nothing. Check the system tray near the time to close any applications that may be running
5) Use task manager to end the process for anything not needed for Windows to run. If you are unsure, Google is your friend here (you may temporarily open a browser then close when done searching)
6) Run setup.exe from the install DVD - Alternatively and better approach, is to copy the entire contents of the DVD to a folder on your hard drive and then run setup.exe from there

Seems like a beneficial addition to me. The one thing here to watch out for is that I've noticed users reporting graphics adapter (video card) models are being reported as incompatible. This happens with models I am completely sure work well in 7. So the Adviser could possibly be labeled as "inefficient" when it comes to this.

This list above isn't only for users with problems. It's just good practice for all upgrading too. They are standard steps I've taken during my countless upgrades during beta testing. All have succeeded to desktop without issue.

I'm really new at everything realted to compers other than surfing the net, Excel and Word, but I was able to do a clean install, with no problems what so ever. I suggest that rather than follow the very good and accurate information on upgrading, a clean install is advised.

You are correct, a clean install is always preferrable - gets rid of the junk.

Some folks, me included, want to keep the current layout, apps, etc., on their systems, so an upgrade, if done properly, is a viable alternative.

If you do an upgrade, and don't follow the advice above, you can run into a raft of problems.
