For everyone concerned about buying the upgrade disk

Not a problem - my XP to Win 7 "upgrades" are all going to be clean installs. The only kink is going from XP Pro x64 to Win 7 Home Premium x64. I still have to say nowhere in any of the MS upgrade information do they mention XP Pro to Win 7 Pro restriction. I also e-mailed a point blank question to MS and here's the expected inconclusive response I got:

I have a workstation with XP Pro x64 and a notebook with XP Pro 32-bit. Can I use the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade option (2 separate copies of course) to update them to Windows 7?

Thanks!

How official are these Pro-to-Pro restriction sources?

Edit: OK, I bit the bullet and called MS Store. The lady said she thought it was Pro-to-Pro, but went to check. After a couple of minutes she came back and said that yes, you can go XP Pro to Win 7 Home Premium. So there's a fairly official take on this, for now! If somebody else can get another non-conflicting call on this (877 696-7786) maybe we can be even more reassured. I loved the voice menu first option: If you're calling about Windows 7, press 7" :D.

The vista pro-to-pro or ultimate is from MS themselves. I am thinking of calling to confirm XP upgradability. I'm finding it hard to find solid references dealing with XP level restrictions

EDIT- A third call to microsoft, since upgrading from XP REQUIRES a clean install, XP users can choose any level of windows 7 to upgrade to, regardless of what level their current XP is.

Can you upgrade from Window XP Pro 32 bit to Win7 Pro 64 bit?
Calling again for confirmation on that one

EDIT- a fourth call to microsoft- According to the rep, he went and checked to confirm this, yes, becuase the windows disks will have 64 and 32 bit (not sure if that meant 2 disks come or if they both are on the same disk, but I guess that doesn't matter), so as long as you are doing a clean install you can go from 32bit to 64bit. And since XP users are REQUIRED to clean install, you can go from 32bit xp to 64 bit 7

Look up a couple posts. Since you have to do a clean install from XP to Win 7, then you can grab any win7 upgrade disk.

I think his question was more geared towards whether or not he could go from 32bit to 64bit. another call to microsoft confirmed that he indeed can so long as it is installed via clean install. And since Xp users are required to clean install, that wouldn't be a problem at all.

I guess I could have been more clear but I meant that as well as I was assuming that with a format and clean install that X86 to X64 or vice versa would not matter. Good call on giving M$ a shout to clear things up, they are proving themselves to be really helpful today.

The computer I plan on installing it to, which currently has the 7 RC on it, doesn't have an OS Disc just the manufacturer restore DVD. Do I actually need the Windows DVD or will having the serial number be good enough? It's XP Home, by the way.
If its installed on your computer, you don't need the OS disk. You boot into your OS, start the disk, and it will confirm you are upgrade eligible. Then it will start the install process and ask you about formatting options and clean install options. But since you have XP it will start the clean install process immediatly. You only need the OS dvd if you want to install on a blank hard drive and don't wanna take the extra time to install 7 upgrade version twice.
Also, you can upgrade your RC if you wanted to keep XP installed on your computer. A previous OS disk is only needed if you want to use the upgrade DVD on a blank hard drive and dont wanna hassle with double installing the 7 upgrade disk.

Yes, one of my calls to microsoft confirmed that when you buy any version of windows 7, full or upgrade, 64 and 32 bit will both be included
