For SSD users, tired of letting Windows Search shorten their lifespan

Since you are an SSD user , I just wanted to pitch you something. A problem, a solution, and a replacement. So please read on. I have a 256gb SSD for solely programs and the operating system, and 196 gigabytes is free from 256. I have my raid 1 HDD parity for my data. Anyway, I have been tracking down Windows Search usage, mostly indexing last few days and I was outraged that It used up about 100mbs of data every 12 hours just to move around data...now why is this a valid concern for a SSD user, we are plagued by a limited number of writes to the darn thing, so over time they degrade, especially if you write/read a lot of data to it. So 100mb every 12 hours might now seem like a lot at first glance, but over time it adds up to terabytes of used writes/reads that basically do nothing for you, unless you have alzheimer's and don't remember where you place something you d/l. So I turned off windows search go to Control -> Add/Remove programs and pick the options on the very left side Turn windows features on/off and locate Windows Search, and untick it, close and reboot. Now you may think (oh no, I am now without windows Indexing, well I said I had a solution, a small program *under 1mb* that does the same thing as windows search, only there is an options not to let it start at Windows start up, rather you run it when you want. It is called Everything and here is the link - > Download Everything , during install untick *start at startup and put your C drive or whichever letter your SSD is and pick Let me search volumes and also pick *Create desktop shortcut* Now you will no longer have windows indexing for no reason, your windows will boot up even faster and respond quicker, and your SSD lifespan will increase and the SSD speed will increase, because windows index, is constantly relying on SSD Trim to collect its garbage. So I really urge you to try this out, if you don't like it, you can always turn windows search back on. Ralph.

100MB every 12 hours is only 73GB per year. Considering that SSDs have been tested to 300TB without failure, losing 73 GB a year is just not enough to lose sleep over.

I depend heavily on Windows Index to find files, no matter how carefully I file them away. And I don't have Alzheimer's (yet, I think).

Yes but this is mainly for laptop users who have everything on their SSD. Imagine a 256 SSD filled 75-90%, I insinuate that the 100mbs will upscale times 20, 30, 40...I can't be sure. So perhaps a GB a day of just useless reads. Again I am thinking of someone on a smaller budget that can't afford a new SSD and wants to extend its lifespan. Then again, you can just have Everything replace Windows Search, and have it go at startup, I have a feeling such a lightweight program won't bother your SSD as much. But hey, this is just an idea.

Considering my laptop stays stored in a drawer most of the time (I mostly use it just on trips), it's even less of a worry for me (I recently put a 500GB SSD in it). The data in it is fairly static.

Well yes, but not to offend you or anything, you are not the only SSD user and some people can only afford or choose to use a laptop as their primary computing source. But you are correct in your assumption that most of the regulars here do the SSD-OS, HDD-data thing, so I guess maybe I should look into a laptop forum to pitch my idea Thank you for bringing that to my attention, have a good day

Well yes, but not to offend you or anything, you are not the only SSD user and some people can only afford or choose to use a laptop as their primary computing source. But you are correct in your assumption that most of the regulars here do the SSD-OS, HDD-data thing, so I guess maybe I should look into a laptop forum to pitch my idea Thank you for bringing that to my attention, have a good day

Backup backup, backup.

This isn't about backup or dataloss, this is more about stopping windows from shortening the lifespan of an SSD. After all, they have a specified number of read/writes, windows indexing slows down your active session, I may have been wrong about bootup time, but with an SSD that is exponentially faster than and HDD. So this little program might extend the total hour lifespan of the SSD, not by actually adding hours as that is not possible, but taking away hours spent on useless reads.

I don't miss windows search. I use an alternative search tool that doesn't require installation. It's insanely fast! I do have another third party search tool installed for when I need to run a filter on searches.
