For the nth time, they keep saying the PC is dead.

Get back to me with "The PC is dead" when I can get a tablet with 1920x1080 resolution, 1 TB of space and a 3 GHz quad core CPU with hyper-threading. Till then, no thanks on replacing my PC with a tablet.

Well you can. So I guess the PC is dead for you. :D All you need to do is replace the SSD with a 1TB Hard Drive and you are good to go.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Eee- ASUS Eee Slate EP121

Well 1280x800 isn't exactly 1920x1200 (actually it's NOTHING like it) but that is a nice slate :D

[Edit] I have a laptop with a 1920x1080 screen, 17.5 inch I think? It's decent, It would be a HUGE tablet but that might be ok. Especially for drawing and photoship using the sylus! I could see having it sit on my lap and work on my photos ... [/Edit]

Tablets don't do it for me.

No keyboard. Strike one.
Tiny screen. I can tolerate 20", but prefer dual 24". Strike two.
Limited processing power. Strike three.

The PC is alive. The tablet was never even born.

Never born to me either. I'm a human female first and foremost. I refuse to cut my nails short enough just so I can play on an expensive toy. =P

(I've never been able to type on anything other than a Nintendo DS screen! It IS possible; why don't they do it???)

Hi all
I posted on the W8 Forum (hope it's not against the rules here to mention W8) that I belive a Killer app would be a 10.1 inch PC with a detachable screen which could be used as a tablet either running W8 or android or whatever.

When the tablet was inserted back into the PC dock it would just be a 100% bog standard PC screen.

Why there isn't any of this type of hard ware apart from the ASUS which only runs android I can't understand.

If I saw a decent tablet /PC combo like I've described I'd buy it in a shot.

Cheers
jimbo

Well the only way I'd get one would be if it was 24" foldaway monitor with the guts of a PC inside it - mind you it would make quite a bulge in your trouser pocket eh!!:roflmao:

Oh meant to add ihorwinkle - yeah mate why would you drive a pick up truck when you can drive a road train lol!!

Try playing Crysis on your tablet.

It is the tablet that is over priced for the performance it offers. PCs are way ahead of Tablets in every possible situation.

Even before posting this article I would ask the journalist whether he/she typed this article on a PC or on the crappy touchscreen.

That would answer all.

I'm almost completely happy and functional on a laptop...but not quite. My desktop is much faster, more configurable and cheaper as a high performance solution that my laptop.

A tablet is nowhere near useful to me. I've played with a bunch of them, and they all suck if you ask me. Useless devices. If I was just surfing the web, than it might be alright. But i do a heck of a lot more than that.

+100 pp just toys in my mind (little though there is of it:geek:) My lappy was really a novelty thing at the time because everyone had one but nothing could entice me to own one of these barmy devices. Like you I like to be able to get inside my desktop and fit and replace things and generally configure it how I want.

In any case I would have to carry a magnifying glass around with me to see the thing! and well when you're out it's usually at work, shopping, driving and such and when are you going to be able to surf the web then?

Mind you I suppose there are some who can do two things at once:cool:

Hi there

"Horses for Courses" so in some cases a tablet might be just fine.

If you just want to surf the web, watch a movie or two or even read a book a decent (and I mean A DECENT) tablet might be OK --although how anybody can spend a long time looking at a screen smaller than about 10 inches which IMO is the smallest decently useable size just amazes me.

However as others have said for doing things like photoshop, composing articles, using complex spreadsheets etc then a tablet i no way is going to work for you.

A decently priced intel I5 core laptop reperesents far better value for money -- the memory can easily be upped to 8GB cheaply -- and even I7 powered laptops are not too pricey (although again an I5 processor represent again IMO an optimum choice between much higher power consumption (I7 core) and longer battery life (I5 core).

I could conceivably use a tablet with a PEN (I don't like touch screens anyway -- smart phones give me enough trouble as it is) for photoshop but the tablet usually is far too underpowered for that and having no decent internal storage available you really wouldn't be able to do very much serious photoshopping (profesional size prints witk lots of layers etc).

The whole issue is as dead as a dodo -- some people will play with these as nice new "Boys Toys" but the PC isn't going away just yet. The Desktop might except for a few instances - but laptops -- no way --- even big businesses are doing away with desktops -- my last 3 projects (including the current one) have all been "Desktop" free --company issues laptops even to external contractors.

Cheers
jimbo
