Force a crash - How do I?

Good People,
Am in a learning and testing phase and need to be able to easily and quickly force a crash. More specifically I need a minidump file from my computer.

All of these people getting unwanted crashes and I want to crash.

um...first thing I can think of would be end task on critical system stuff, maybe lsass or an scvhost, but I dont want you to brick your computer.... lol living on the edge huh?

Will be trying the end critical task approach here in a second and why?

1. No scroll lock key on my keyboard and recommendation required

1. Editing registry--did that and checked carefully twice
2. holding down right ctrl key and tapping on Scroll Lock twice.
   tried using the on-screen keyboard and still no go.

OK chaps,

I need help big time.

First, as i posted before the Ctrl plus twice scroll lock doesn't work for me.

I tried ending process for isass- no success.
I tried ending process for only the lord knows how many svchost processes - no success.

My actions would sometimes result in the system rebooting but not blue screen and no minidump file.

Would one of you, without a scroll lock key on your keyboard, try to force a BSOD?

Here's all of these good people with umpteen blue screens and I can't even get one!

Guess I would have other options if I was using a desktop but I'm using my toshiba satellite laptop.

Been there, Done that.

Notice that the procedure requires a scroll lock key.

I tried using osk (the on screen keyboard). I tried using Pause/Break.

And yes, I edited the registry and must have checked what I added about 5 times and I've edited the registry numerous times, ever since Win 95 days.

Update: At least when I rt-click on a process in Task Manager, one of the options iis "Create dump file" which I'm using for now. The dump file is placed in %Temp%

Open the case and pop the RAM out.

Now that's an interesting approach, although a little more trouble some on a laptop or a netbook as compared to a desktop.

nah, just a stray electrical charge will shock you and damage a chip if you grab the RAM wrong.

The one word answer to your question is: YES.

I am an electrical engineer who during his working career worked for computer manufacturers.

Personally, even exercising certain precautions, this should only be considered as an emergency approach.

I thoroughly expect others, who have not electrically stress tested memories to chime in and say that thev never had any bad experiences. Chips can be "damaged" without failing immediately or even in the next few months.

I defy you to find one computer manufacturer who would suggest "hot" removal or "hot" insertion in everyday computers.

have you tried holding the function key and maybe number lock?

Edit: Clarification hold function key and num-lock to get scroll-lock might work

darn oh well. I looked around the only other option I saw was to hook up an external keyboard

Next time I'm at Fry's I'll look around for something cheap which I can use for generating BSODs.

I remember a while back I could consistently cause my mac to kernel panic by attempting to mount a specially corrupted .dmg (kinda like .iso) virtual disk. Not sure if there is something similar for windows tho.
