Forcing resolution

Hey!

My laptops regular screen (the LCD) just broke (undetectable etc..).. So I need to use an external monitor, which for now is a projector.

This works fine WITHOUT Nvidia drivers, since Windows autodetects the projector and set it as primary even in the bootup process.. (as in when u choose safe-mode or not...)

But when I install Nvidia drivers, all monitors are black when I try to boot up. It's straight out ridiculous, I can see windows loading and then BAM all black... The only workaround I've found is to either go into safe-mode or uninstall the drivers..

This 16 coulour thingy is killing me!

I can access safe-mode with the drivers installed, anyway to set it right? Using the Fn+F4 cmnd, won't work! (which in windows xp at least was the cmnd for toggling projectors..)

Is it possible to force windows 7 to use a higher resolution without installing the graphics drivers? Is creating an inf for my monitor/projector helping me in this situation? (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7947-force-dvi-hdmi-resolutions-refresh-rates.html)

Any help is appretiated!

The Windows logo key + P, has no effect what so ever , regardless of the Nvidia drivers beeing installed or not!

Is there a driver for a standard graphics card that supports more than 16 colours, thats compatible with the Nvidia chipset? Or are they specific to each individual model?

Anyway to work around not having the Nvidia drivers installed?

The monitor drivers, looks ok to me, I've also made a new inf for the monitor im currently using which clearly states that it supports 1280x1024 etc.. So the problem is in the graphics drivers!

Really? That key doesn't do anything? It should redirect the monitor output to the projector....

Try removing the NVidia drivers and open device manager (windows + pause/break). Right click on the display adapter and choose update drivers. Try that.

No luck with the windows key + p... Nothing happens when I don't have the drivers installed neither! Maybe its cause my external monitor is already primary and plugged in the VGA port.

Also wierd is the fn+f4 button (for switching between projectors etc) works without Nvidia drivers, I can see the screen flashing... but not with. So I basically have no cmnd to activate the external screen.

I have tried adding the "Connect to a projector" button to the quick launch bar, using Windows key + number, to run it.. no luck! Same with opening the start menu and trying to start "Connect to a projector".. no luck neither! Maybe its me failing, maybe something is wrong... I have no idea how Nvidas drivers and software work during the 1st start up..Also it could be that I don't actually have a projector connected to my laptop right now, but a monitor..

I tried:
Installing windows xp drivers in compability mode (the ones that came along with my computer) -> windows crashes as in wont work at all, with black screen
Installing the latest win 7 drivers -> black screen

Im gonna try installing the lastest ones in Windows Vista compability mode and also plug in an actual projector... but other than that I'm about to run out of ideas!

I've tried both external monitor and projector with, XP, Vista and Windows 7 drivers..

It just wont work unlike I run Windows without any Nvidia drivers.

Is there a driver for a standard graphics card that supports more than 16 colours, thats compatible with the Nvidia chipset? Or are they specific to each individual model?

Can I force Windows to always use an external monitor? No matter the drivers?
