Format or Uninstall and Defrag.

Hello I hope I'm in the correct area, my apologies if not! My main internal drive is 1T, with 2 partitions, one has a capacity of 221 GB of which 113 GB is free (F) and the second is 241GB of which 151 GB is free (C), 'C' has a Windows 7 OS and 'F' is 8.1, (both 64 bit) I use 'C' solely for day to day stuff and 'F' for my Flight Simulator, I have dual boot facility.
I am in a position where I would like to reinstall all of my Flight Sim stuff, clean the drive, or Format?
If I Format Drive C: would I lose the OS and have to reinstall, or, alternatively might it be easier to uninstall all application not required and then to Defrag?

Just uninstall what you don`t want, run Ccleaner to cleanup the registry (it`s totally safe) then defrag the drive 2 to 3 times, more if still necessary.

All the help I've seen you give here, and I have seen you give some good advice, I would not believe you would give the advise above. I have had to fix too many computers that have been bricked by Registry cleaners. Why would you suggest that? The OP could only save a few KBs on a drive that has 113/151GBs free?

I'll go along with CCleaner, have yet to have a computer 'bricked' by it. But then I run a full/deep up-to-date antivirus first followed by Malwarebytes. There are other cleaners that do indeed cause more problems but most times they want money to fix them.

Because I have used Ccleaner for years, never had an issue with it, and no one I know here ever has, I do not give out bad advice.

I did not say registry cleaners, I said Ccleaner, I would never suggest somehting I haven`t used for a very long time.

All it does is remove invalid keys and duplicates. Learn before you mock.

I apologize if I sounded disapproval but I personally would never recommend Any registry cleaner to save a few KBs. I have also used Ccleaner for years although I do not allow it to delete anything unless I know what is being deleted. I have to look at everything that's being deleted before I allow the process and most users out there don't know to do that.

Ccleaner is a great program. I use it daily. Normal default setting to clean junk works great. Never had a problem with it doing the clean.

Ccleaner has the safest Registry Cleaner I know of but because it does do things to the registry one should check what it finds before removing things from the registry. I use the Registry portion seldom just because I don't need to.

Ccleaner also has a backup request before cleaning the registry and I recommend backing up when it request it. No program is perfect all the time so the backup is a smart move.

I have never had Ccleaner hurt any of my systems and I have used it for years.

I would never recommend any other program that fools with Windows 7 registry.

***What ever program one uses and I don't care what it is, you need to learn how to use it correctly.

I use CCleaner registry cleaner. I sometimes do a quick review then let it do the clean. I ALWAYS let it make a backup of what it is removing just in case but in years of use have never had to restore what CCleaner deleted.

Many things on this forum people disagree on but we disagree politely.

I don't think their is a need to defrag a hard drive sever times one right the other.
In my opinion is just a lot of wear and tear on a hard drive.

My point in this situation is to defrag after you remove a program, yes, once would be fine in this instance, maybe twice. A proper defraged drive should get it done in seconds.

Whenever I advise doing it 3 to 4 to 5 times it`s for the people who come claiming their PC is running extremely slow and hasn`t had a re install in years and they do not want to re install

In another place, the techs are very clear on advising anyone in that other place -- do not use registry cleaners. However, I also have been using well-configured, well-setup registry cleaners and register editors cautiously, selectively -- and like the others here -- have had very few problems.
A related aside: I do not compress or compact the registry ever.

AddRAM, did you ever try out Registrar Registry Manager? I have, it's pretty cool, I was able to root out license numbers no longer needed, and now the laptop I took to school only has free stuff on it.
