Formatting C but C doesn't get cleaned

Usually when I format my computer I install windows 7 on C so C gets cleaned, all programs and viruses removed but when I tried to do the same yesterday C still had all of it's files on windows.old so I am afraid that the formatting was ineffective and the viruses are still around.

When I entered windows.old I have found that it contained all of the previous files, also steam did not get deleted or moved at all. It stayed in C even after the formatting.

What am I doing wrong?

You havent formatted before installation. Use this guide to reinstall and pay close attention to steps 6, 7 and 8.

The hard drive is not "unallocated", it has 16 GB out of 106 available GB.

I did use custom (advanced) install but not drive options (advanced).

What is my mistake?

I currently have 2 hard drives, C and D with C having 106 GB and D 230 GB and I want C to be cleaned having all viruses there removed

You need to delete the existing partition/s......see steps 6, 7 and 8 in the tutorial.

Alright, drive custom and choose delete or should I choose format?

As far as I understand I use drive custom options, choose delete, select unallocated hard drive space and it will turn into C.

Am I correct?

Saw a video of a person formatting his computer, he deleted C, installed windows 7 on it and it worked fine.

If I do the same the unallocated drive will become C? I ask this because I currently have 2 hard drives

First remove HDD 2.

To clean install:
1) Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:

Always unplug all other HD's, boot the installer, delete all partitions as suggested, then create and format new as you please, or just click Next to let installer create and format and begin install.

Other tips to get and keep a perfect install are the same as for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .

So I
1) Take out my 2nd hard drive
2) Go into drive advanced options
3) Delete C
4) Install windows 7 on the unallocated hard drive space
5) Re-connect my 2nd hard drive

Will this clean C and keep F on the computer?

Yes, but what is F ? Your dvd drive ?

You can choose delete or you can format the install partition ( in this case C ) either way it will remove the old operating system and any data you had on it.

Oh I meant to say D, yes it is my dvd drive.

By the way why should I take out my 2nd dvd drive before formatting?

exactly like it says to do it in the blue link, so we can help you better.

You need to unplug any other HD's during install, delete all partitions so that it becomes Unallocated Space, then create your partition and install to it.

Unplug all other HD's to install Win7 to target HD, delete all partitions and create new during installl.
