Formatting cd problem

Everytime I try and burn a photo onto a CD, I get the message that the disk needs formatting. I get no prompt at anytime to format the cd.
In the past, all I had to do was either move a picture to the cd via windows explorer or open the picture and click burn.
Right clicking the cd does not say anything about formatting. I know I am doing something wrong but I can not figure it out.
Please help.

Windows cannot read disc

Thanks, however the routine from above is exactly what I have done successfully ever since I worked on XP, Vista and even W7. Up until a few months ago, this worked on my W7 machine. I put the disc in and it asked for a name and the burn took place, no formating question ever came up. Now all of a sudden, it no longer works on 2 W7 machines.
I get the message "Windows can't read the disc in drive e:\, Make sure the disc uses a format that windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it."

I don't think this is a real good answer to your question. But it may help.

Format a CD or DVD

I get no dialogue box when I put a disc in the slot. Nothing happens until I click the "burn" option on a picture. I did download a trial cd burner program "Express burn" and I had no problems. I put a file in the exporess burn window and told it to burn and it went as expected.
In the past all I had to do was drag a picture to the cd drive in Window explorer and everything worked fine.
The other thing that seem odd is when I put the blank cd in the cd drive, I no longer see the cd drive in window explorer under computer. It is there until I put the blank cd in. When I put the cd in I get the message " The Parameter is incorrect" and than the cd drive goes away.
Sorry for the long reply but I think something has changed that has prevented cd burn as I usually accomplished it.

Thanks Hammerhead, but no cigar. I do believe the problem is in the registers however. As a side note, I have 3 computers, 2 W7 and 1 Vista and all are experiencing the same problem. Probably from a register cleaner I have on all three computers. I went through you routine and it did not fix the probleml. My sub key address was different than the one you noted (I did not have that number under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class.
For anyone not understanding Device Class this site helped me find the correct one ( Device Class - Device Class GUIDs for Popular Types of Hardware).
Thanks again. I now feel I only have 2 options, a clean install or purchase a cd/dvd burn program.
To all that offered suggestions, thanks for your suggestions.

Sorry

Wish something would have worked. A clean install maybe a good path.

Before resorting to a clean install, try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two.) If any problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting after each scan.

If SFC scan doesn't help you could also try a Repair Install. It should preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, many personal settings, etc.
