Formatting leaves less free space

Hello

So I have finally been able to start installing windows. I noticed I have to disk partitions on Disk 0. One is partition 1 and the second partition 2.

I read on this site that I should delete and then create new and then format to completely wipe my hard drive.

Now I do this with disk partition 1. But after I format, I create a new with th exact same amount of space (100 mb.) the formatted version only has 86.0 mb free space after doing so.

The other, my new hard drive of 931.4 gb is unable to be deleted or formatted and it shows a total size of 931.4 gb and 930.8 gb free space.

How come I am not able to completely wipe these two partitions out and start afresh with a windows install?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't expect to see partitions with numbers like 1 and 2. Drives yes, partitions no.

You don't have to ask Windows to format a partition. It will do that automatically during the installation process.

You say "it shows a total size..........".

Show us that picture. I assume you are referring to Windows Disk Management. Post a screen shot of what you see.

You wouldn't create the 100mb System Reserved partition which you describe there, as it is automatically created by the Win7 installer when you delete all partitions and then create your new install partition, plus any other partitions you want to follow that.

Use the Drive Options picture in Steps 7 and 8 of Clean Install Windows 7..

Sorry about your storage loss

Sometimes formatting will mask out bad hd sectors, effectively reducing its size.

If you want another opinion, I would recommend GParted. GParted -- Download
You can download GParted onto a flash drive and boot/run from there. You can format the partition to NTFS using Linux GParted... GParted -- Screenshots
