FPS and Ping problems when someone downloading on other computer.

Hello

In the next paragraphs i'll do my best to explain my problem as best I can. I hope someone can help me.

In my house we have a WIFI network, on this WIFI network there are 2 tablets and 1 laptop connected.
We also have a LAN connection where 1 laptop and 1 desktop is connected on with an ETHERNET adapter.

The laptop and the desktop on the ethernet connection are disturbing each other when someone start to download, or just watches a song on youtube... Then the fps and ping reaches 1000 when the other pc is playing a game.

When we shut down our wireless connection we don't have any problems with our pings and fps. But then we can't use our tablets anymore ...

What is the problem, how can we solve this ?

Hi there and welcome to SevenForums!

At a first glance i am going to suggest that you don't actually have enough bandwidth for all that you wish to do online. Could you Go to Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test, run it and then show us the results?

Would you then also be able to repeat these steps when your either playing games or downloading.


As to solving it, you may need a better internet connection from your ISP.

I thought my internet was good, on wireless and ethernet both connection are at 100 mbps.
But here is the speedtest without downloading anything on all devices.

Here is a speedtest result from watching a 15 min lenght movie and on the other pc playing a game he reached 500 ping.

If i switched the wireless network off , I wouldn't had any problem with lag or loading videos. But can't do a speedtest then :s

2 tablets and a Laptop connection to the Internet through a WiFi connection right?

Here's the problem. 2 tablets and a Laptop could be loading pictures, having a chat, or downloading apps at the same time. Try only with 1 Laptop connected to WiFi BUT DO NOT USE INTERNET ON IT YET and keep the other Laptop and the Desktop connected through the Ethernet port and do a Speedtest or a Pingtest.

The laptop was shutted down on the speedtests. Only an Ipad was connected where someone was playing a random game on and 1 Iphone that is connected as wel and didn't downloaded anything.

I don't really think that's the problem then. But if you really think it is. I will speedtest on it.

I don't know that much about computers or internet connections. But it feels like they are in conflict on each other or disturbing each other... If i'm home alone, I can download like 6 movies and 3 cds, and watching a movie online , watching a stream and don't have lags or internet issues

When someone arrives home , starting up laptop or desktop and do a random thing on the internet, everything is f*cked up

I'm actually willing to bet that your issue is coming from the low bandwidth, mainly because i used to face the same issue with 2 xbox's on a 5Mb connection. The reason i say this is that a normal gaming session will stream a constant 2-3mb of data whilst connected to a remote server, take into consideration your on a 5mb connection and there is your problem.

When your downloading i am going to assume you are using a P2P program, which is fine, however this also does the same as a game, however it tends to use a lot more bandwidth as it is both uploading file states and downloading the next block.

You may want to have a read of this article : Page 2 - How To Configure Your Router for Gaming | ExtremeTech as he actually gives a brief explanation of for the best setup.


Could you also ensure that you have QoS enabled within the router? This is so the router knows to prioritise bandwidth depending on what actually needs the most.
