NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB & GTX 460 768MB Review

Here's review on 768mb and 1GB versions of GTX 460 5830 and 5850 and few others.
What you should look at is the game tests, not just 1 game or the game you like or play, but few of em to get wider picture what the card is capable of.
Then overclocking if you're into that, and power consumption if you care about that and conclusion, to me it looks best choice.

Thanks, i'll have a look through it.

there's always a lot of debate about which is the better of amd/ati or nvidia graphics cards.

you've already got an ati card and drivers installed, making it a bit simpler to stick with ati, if you ask me. others may disagree :)

of course, it's your money and buy whichever you like. you won't be dissatisfied whichever you chose.

as far as a 500w psu, about $50? i'm not sure, as i'm in england.

you may need to ask for some help installing it though, have you a friend or neighbour who is knowledgable in this area? installing the card is pretty simple, but the psu will be a bit trickier,as there are more plugs/leads to deal with.

I'm in England aswell :p As for the installing part, to be honest, i have no clue  I was looking on buying the parts and then taking it to a computer shop because i don't really feel comfortable doing it myself.

As for the graphics card, i really don't mind on the make i just want one that is good enough to run every thing smoothly. As i have an ati now i presume it would be easier to get another ati. Could you recommend any stores to get a graphics card and a new psu?

installing a graphics card and a psu is not really for beginners - unless you're brave, adventurous and willing to learn! it's one of those things that is simple and straight-forward if you've done it before, but can be a bit of a nightmare if you're a beginner. there are lots of leads coming out of the psu that need to be unplugged and replugged into various places and components inside your machine.

if you're in devon, you can bring it over to me, and i'll do it for you! :) otherwise it's a good idea to get some outside help who knows what they are doing.

do you have a favourite online shop to buy from? if so i could help advise which bits to buy.

what's your budget for the card and psu?

I don't really have a budget. I want one that is good enough for the top settings on pretty much any game but i don't want to spend loads. If you could tell me some prices and i will tell you if i am willing to pay that much.

If you're going to buy psu, don't i say again DON'T buy cheapest and with most watts, that tells nothing about it.

Look at the tech specs and look at how much amps the 12v rail is giving, it should be stated, if it's not you'll know it's not good psu.

corsair is good quality so stick with those, also psu with multiple 12v's is not that great either, but remember the amps on 12v rail is what matters, not the watts, low amps on 12v rail means if you put some load on the psu it will blow up sooner or later.

Pay for quality on those so it lasts good 4 years or more.

400 watt should run any non high end card, 650w runs any card, expect for sli/crossfire.

Installing GPU is very easy but it's good idea to not just figure it out yourself, even though that usually wont do any bad, if you have unplugged your pc from wall, and have pressed power button few times to release the remaining charge.

But you could look at youtube videos on how to install GPU, it's not really rocket science, you just need some reference and it's as easy as changing pants.

PSU on the other hand might not be, horrible cable mess and all, better do that with expert or put some time into this kind of stuff yourself.

Anyhow I'm still with 460, and it's not ati vs nvidia, it's just that I don't see any competition in the mid range GPU's since 460 came out, it's cheaper, cooler and more silent, plus it almost beats 5850 too.

okay, a 5850 graphics card card will be about £250, 5870 = about £350

gtx 460 about £175 which is a lot of bang for buck - i may change my mind from what i said above, and go for this card. the 5850 is slightly faster, but quite a bit more expensive - you pays your money and you takes your choice...;)

half decent 500w psu about £60

maybe postage to pay on top, depending where you buy.

So is the gtx 460 able to run every thing smoothly? Also, do i have to check if it is compatable with the other stuff in my computer or doesn't that matter?

the 460 will certainly be a big improvement over what you have at the moment.

it's a case of how much do you want to spend? the more you spend, the better the card. read the reviews, and make up your mind.

all the cards will be compatible with your machine, once you've upgraded the power supply unit.

the only extra thing if you go with the 460 is you will need to uninstall the ati drivers first, replace the card, then install nvidia drivers. not a complicated process - especially as you'll be having the hardware replaced by a shop. it shouldn't take more than an hour all done if the guy knows what he's doing.

*edit* the ocz psu you link above is a very good psu indeed and will last a good few years.

I don't really want to spend alot. the Computer itself is just over a year old. I think i would spend around £250 on a graphics card if it is a good one and then prehaps the cpu i posted above if you suggest it.

remember that you will also get charged to have the parts fitted.

Well, I would think from 20 to 50 dollars or whatever is the currency you are using, more if theres more work to do, it's quite expensive atleast in my eyes, but that might be because I can do it myself.

Also ocz is good brand too, that psu is just fine.

GTX 460 will run every game, and smoothly depending of settings ofcourse, even my GTX 480 which is most powerful single gpu in the market, wont run metro 2033 maxed over 30 fps, but thats that and then there is other games.

But I'd say you can run high settings in most games, it depends alot on the game in question.

it shouldn't take more than an hour - 90 mins max i would say.

Well, the one in first link is reference card, which means it's not modified by zotac, and it's 1GB, the second card is 768mb but it has custom cooler atleast, but performs worse because of the memory bandwidth is 192 instead of 256, so get the on in first link, or any other 1GB version, they are the same pretty much, unless it's non-reference, like that synergy edition.

I think galaxy has the best performing non-reference card, if you can find that with decent price, go get it.

the cards are new, and not everywhere has them. neither of the cards you link is actually in stock, and won't be for a couple of weeks. and i've never heard of 'zotac'.

you really want one with 1 gb of memory if you want to play at high resolution.

i like to buy stuff from overclockers.co.uk - the prices are competitive, and service is good.

here's a good 460 card in stock for £190, and a good ocz psu special offer at £59

Zotac is fine brand actually :p I've got zotac gtx 480, too.

Sure evga is the best but they are overpriced around here.

edit: and that palit you linked is actually very good, non-reference too, which can be good thing, but also bad if you want to change cooler (which you shouldn't because that's sufficient).
Also doesn't look that expensive, but I don't know how much 1£ is in euros tho.
edit: ~230 euros, that's around 10 euros cheaper than here.
