hi there,

so I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7 last week and I've been getting random frame rate drops..I got pretty good frame rates in Windows XP and didnt get any choke at all..in Windows 7 my frame rates are around 50-60 (which is fine) but they randomly and frequently drop to like 10-15 fps for 2-3 seconds. It gets annoying after a while obviously.

my computer specs are as follows:

Windows 7 32-bit
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz HT
1.5GB RAM
160GB HDD
nVidia 8800GS video card

has anyone else experienced this or can anyone recommend a solution to fixing the problem?

thank you

What Build of Windows 7 do you have and was it from Microsoft or a torrent, I ask because there were reports of infected torrents about last week and if you don't have any virus software then I would recommend you get some, most of us are using Avast Home free edition.

I'm not sure how to check if I have it or not, I just assumed Windows 7 would install the appropriate drivers

well i updated the driver, and now the driver version is "8.15.11.8585" and there's no WDDM comment at the top of the screen.

I just tried Source and I didnt get my fps dropping like it used to. I'll play more tomorrow just to make sure the driver fixed it.

Well, your pc with only 1.5GB ram that is why, you can afford buy new a pair of 2GB total 4GB should be no problem.

1.5GB ? you got kiddin me

yes 1.5GB is best for XP but not Vista or Win 7 okay.

same problem under windows 7 - CSS

hi, I tried the beta build 7000 and I had many problems with the choke, the ping normal but the choke increased easy to 50.
this is not happening in Windows XP, also can assure you that is not the memory because I have 4 gb of memory.

the characteristics of my pc are:

intel dual core 2.0 ghz
4gb ram DDR2
Grafic card Ati Radeon HD 4670

I also tried the RC 7100 and gives me exactly the same problem.
I hope that this bug is fixed in the final version, because the css in a very popular game.
thx

Ha, funny thing, im in the same exact boat. I too have a Pentium 4 3.2 HT, 2 gigs RAM, and a nVidia 7800GT in Windows 7 RC1, and back on XP i got 120 on the stress test, and with the EXACT same settings in Win7 i get ~90 FPS, and in game I get random frame drops too, mainly when looking at a far distance.

I think its crazy how i have lost so much framerate by going to this Windows. Its my only complaint though, Win7 is 30x better than any other OS out there, its just kinda stressing. I hope they solve this frame drops.

Frame drops in TF2 and CSS. Trying COD4 tomorrow and will see what happens.

Also im getting some older Omega drivers for Vista64 and will be trying them out tonight.

I have this same problem on my Windows 7 7229 build. Switched from XP 32-bit to 7 64-bit. I have AMD 6000+, 4gb ram, x2 7950 GT OCs. I used to get 200+ FPS in the stress test, now I get like 180.

Not sure how this is even possible, seeing as I am using a 64-bit version now, and how 7 is supposed to be "faster". Going to go to XP 64-bit and see if that does anything, if not, back to 32-bit XP.

CS:S works perfect for me. I get around 160-200+ FPS. It must be a hardware problem. Check if your card has any beta Windows 7 drivers. ATI has already released theirs.

For the two guys with the 7000 series cards:

Win 7 is built around DX 11, which your cards cannot support.

it will still run in DX9 but with slightly less frame rates.

I have the same problem in CS:S when I die or kill someone my frames drop to almost nothing for a second. Almost like a lag spike. I have 15Mb - 20Mb download speed so I don't believe it would be lag. My ping is usually around 30-50.

The problem isn't with memory. I get the same problem as the original poster that has 1.5GB of ram and I have 8GB of ram and a 1GB gtx280.

I tried running "fps_max 100" or 60 but it doesn't seem to help at all.

honestly your computer processor is very weak.
Valve games ( Source based engine) Prefer cpu horsepower than graphic power.
so most of the weight is placed on the cpu.
id get a dual core to replace it.

This is true, but i also noticed that when i increase graphics settings in CSS ( put anti-aliasing to 8x, and anisotropic filtering to 16x, up the resolution etc) i actually get higher FPS in the built in graphics test, cause then i guess the graphics card takes over the processing and rendering instead of the CPU. This is in XP btw, in Win 7 CSS just behaves weird, i guess its because the game is buggy and old and the Win 7 is not final and has bugs too, the drivers are not polished yet etc...
