Free Artificial Intelligence for Windows 7

Verbots is a great AI program for your computer made by Conversive, Inc.

It's like Ultra Hal Assistant but Free.

With Verbot you can have hours of fun and be more productive too! The verbot interface has a skinnable pretty face you can really talk to. They can spell out their sentences and speak to you with a nice sounding voice through your speakers. You can use high quality sounding voices with them such as professional products like AT&A Natural Voice and others. Hold a complete conversation with your PC.

The verbots can be talked with via typing or through a microphone. They have the ability to learn and can open applications for you with a verbal command. They can become your very own personal PC assistant.

With Text to Speech they can read your documents out loud for you.

The program has many different free avatars you can download and use as well as other "personalities". You can talk to your verbots full screen or in a smaller less obtrusive window or completely minimized.

From the company:

"A Verbot (Verbally Enhanced Software Robot) can be your personal assistant, your teacher, and friend. Verbot combine natural language, artificial intelligence, and real-time animation with voice synthesis to create engaging virtual personalities. Using XML and .NET architecture, Verbot is cutting-edge technology, and extremely user-friendly. You can easily change your character's face and voice, or create your own skins for a custom look. Verbot can run programs, read aloud to you, launch Web sites, and speak other languages."

I have used Verbots since 2003 and love them. They have a strong dedicated community (with help forum) that is growing all the time.

Thanks for the article, but I don't really see a point in this kind of software. Talking to a robot? I'm not that desperate and friendless XD
Besides, if someone hears me talk to someone and enter the room, and see that I'm talking to the computer, then they'll really think I'm a PC addict, since I spend almost all my free time on the PC. XD

The reason why a lot of people are interested in this type of software is because it is a good experiment in Artificial Intelligence. It shows how AI can be used for different things such as how programs can 'learn' and simulate human thought or behavior.

There are lots of voice commands you can give you computer throuh Verbots to open files and browse the web ( check the website for details) But the cool stuff is when you hook X10 modules or something similar to it, and walk into a room and say, " Verbot ... Lights On or Verbot, Set an alarm for me at 7 am and have the coffee ready". You can in this way by AI and voice command actually run every appliance in your house!

For the last command lets say, you can have predefined script run that turns on the coffee maker 10 minutes before you wake up, and then run the alarm. Of course you will have to set up the coffee maker the night before. Verbots will hear you say "Set an alarm" and set the programming running then it will hear you say, "have the coffee ready" and run that script.

Trust me.. it may not be your cup of tea but tons of people LOVE to talk to AI programs. Do a search for web based chatterbots and you will see how popular they are.

The thing is they are not quite there yet as being human goes and really making good intelligent conversation all the time, but they are getting better. If you talk to a verbot long enough (Over the course of months or years) it will learn and remember facts that you tell it and incorporate them into your conversation.

You could walk into your house one day and hear the verbot say "Good evening Master, would you like me to turn on the teleivision or start the dinner? How was your day?, I hope it was pleasant. You have mail!" (grin) Funny but yeah.. you could teach it do do those types of things with the right savyness and a few addons technology wise.

( You can already do these things with other AI programs, but giving this type of use a personality and one that can learn is a plus. )

can it surf Wikipedia and explain crap to me or root through my word documents and warn me about my misuse of the English language? more over why does every AI gotta have a face that is a waste of resources it could be devoting to valuable logical processes? also what about the moral issues i want to be a 100% sure that i'm ok with it's functionality. is there an AI that would be more suited to my office needs? please don't omit AI programs just because i have to pay for them. if i install one and it isn't what i'm looking for it would be really difficult for me to just uninstall it. i'm a sci-fi writer i know the moral dilemma better than the back of my hand.

Just for your information:

The last post before yours in this thread is over 4 years old. Since that this AI robot has died. From the developers, published December 2012:

If we look at Matt's brief post A little history: Chatterbots and Conversive*we can see that, in terms of major developments, there haven't been any since 2006 when Verbots Online was introduced. The Verbots Desktop 5 I believe was a push to make Verbots Desktop compatible with a newer version of .NET and to get it working with Windows 7. If I had to guess Matt probably spent less than a months worth of work (part time) on it. No significant development in 6 years says something about the product.

Then finally, February this year they had a bit bad luck:

The group at Avaya that manages the former Conversive websites (Conversive.com, Verbots.com, Verbot Forums, etc.) accidently deleted the servers thinking they weren't used anymore. This was a mistake but a mistake that couldn't be undone. There were no backups that could be restored (something about once you delete the cloud image the backups disappear with them). Everything on those websites is gone forever.

Alas this is how Verbots.com ends. Hopefully someone will finally create a Community Run Forum*- if there is anyone left in the community interested.*
