Area 51 is free but the game was released about 2005 so the graphics arent so good.

Graphics don't really mean much. Gameplay is what it's about. Doom 2 has some nasty graphics compared to today, but it's still my most favorite game ever created. Not a lot of games are free either. Maybe except some website based games, and "abandon-ware" (games that have been "abandoned" in the 90's and is free to download, such as SimAnt or some-such). I don't know of any FPS games that are free.

Sauerbraten (Cube 2) is one of my favorite FPS games, it was listed in the link that DiDaDo provided, however i thought i would highlight it specifically. I played its predecessor Cube for a long time then moved to Cube 2 when it was released. Highly recommended :D
