I've been using Total Commander (website) for years. Technically, it's shareware, but aside from the initial screen, it is nag-free, and a wonderful replacement for Windows file manager system, search tool, multi-rename tool, built in FTP client, built-in support for creating and using archives (ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE), etc... a great little program that I recommend highly!

This program deserves its own thread. Many other things it can do, more than I will list here as it is OT. but def. great program.

Brink, I have to give credit when its due, HankZ originally suggested Total Commander, I was agreeing with him. There is another program Freecommander that is freeware, but I don't think it is covered by Win7 yet.

FreeCommander - freeware file manager

I have not tested this on Win7, but it is Vista Compatible

There is another Program called 4t-Min that I was using in XP, but it doesn't want to work right in Win7 64x.... If someone wants to test it out in 32x It is a great program for minimizing windows to the Tray as an icon instead of in Taskbar.

4t Tray Minimizer Free/Pro - Minimize Outlook, Internet Explorer, Firefox and any other applications to the system tray!

Again, this doesn't work in 64x It would need to be tested in 32x... There is a full ($$$) version and a freeware version. Enjoy

(In 64x this installs and runs, but IE fails)

I've been using FreeCommander for years. It works fine on my Windows Seven 32 bit. I have it on Vista64 also, but it can get strange lags, esp. delays highlighting stuff selected with the mouse. On 32 bit systems it should be fine though.

It's a Delphi application so chances of a 64 bit port are next to null unfortunately.

Reprofiler

A common problem encountered with all recent Windows versions is the unexplained loss of access to a user's data and settings.

This can happen for a number of reasons:

  • A disk error
  • Joining the computer to a domain
  • Disjoining the computer from a domain
  • Transfer of data to a new computer
  • Filesystem-permissions issues.
  • A change of username.
In most such circumstances, the problem arises because Windows no longer recognises the profile as belonging to its user. What will happen in this case is that the next time the user logs-on, a fresh, empty profile will be created, named 'user.domain' or 'user.computer' instead of just 'user' -and from that point on, the new profile will be used instead of the correct one.

It is possible to correct this type of problem manually, but this involves editing the registry and adjusting permissions, tasks which are painstaking and time-consuming, and are probably beyond the skill-level of the average user.

Reprofiler offers a quick and easy way to see which profile is associated with which user. If a problem is evident, it then provides an intuitive and straightforward means of correcting the profile ownership.

More info on software and download over here : Reprofiler - A tool for repairing broken userprofile-associations.

Fantastic pun.

Heh, where it's Delphi I should have said Nil actually. But why squabble over nothing?

View attachment 57878

HAHA, that's funny. I don't know any Delphi, but the 'null' made me laugh. I'll have to skim over some Delphi literature for what it's worth. I don't see much developed in Delphi anymore.
