FREE Great Programs for Windows 7

It's already listed. ;)

Hmmmm, did a thread search before I posted.

Guess I didn't check all the spelling with and without spaces etc..

edit: weird. I see it in the heavy font if I browse the list manually, but the search didn't pick it off. Strange.

edit2: Just tried the same thing in the 64 bit thread. At the top of the list I search 'q-dir' and 'Q-Dir' and get no hits. I scroll down and there it is.

Thanks,

Sysmgr seems to work fine on 7 x64.

The shortcut target is \Windows\SysWOW64\sysmgr.msc

I'm attaching a zip file with a couple of little toys I found very useful on XP, and have updated for Win7.

The first is a wrap up of Managament Console applets in a "System Manager" that has most of the system's settings and tools right at hand...

The second is a very simple autologon creator... just enter your username and password then click Enable... when you reboot it will take you right into the account... simple as pie.

Feel free to add these to the freeware list if you like....

Thanks for that. I'm using x86 so I wasn't 100% sure about x64.

I just gave the CPU Speed applet a little try and it is way off...

It fails to take AMD's "Cool and Quiet" speed scaling into account. Anyone using it is going to get a wrong answer.

You may want to add Pelles C ... my favorite programming tool. Compiles both 32 and 64 bit programs written in C99, and has a very easy to use IDE.

I didn't see The Ultimate Boot Disc in the list. If you click on the link, and scroll down the page to see all the tools it has you'll freak out. It's great to have a single CD that has so many kick-ass DOS tools on it. I would be lost without it. And of course, it's absolutely free. You know the old saying "If it's for free, it's for me!" ;)

PMeter is a simple to use desktop ruler allowing to switch between 3 user configurations easily. For each configuration you can set width and colors individually, choose to add a desktop magnifier to your ruler, and more.

PMeter also includes a color picker in case you need to know or work with the color of any pixel visible on your screen. The additional display for mouse cursor coordinates might also be useful for you.

Of course PMeter is a portable application you can carry with you on your USB drive, but it can also be installed locally to your hard drive.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Just a suggestion. Anyway, I don't think any PC user should be without a CD of The Ultimate Boot Disc. In times of catastophe, it's a real jewel. And for everyday sorta' stuff too. I would be lost without it.

Speaking of booting recovery tools, one of the things I liked about Linux was making a boot diskette so that if your Lilo or Grub got hosed, you could boot the diskette and it would load Linux from the HD. If you follow the instructions on this page you can do the same thing with Vista or W7:

Multibooters, Vista Dual and Multibooting - Vista Boot Floppy

Just scroll down a bit and it shows how to format a USB key so you can boot your boot manager from it. Might be a good thing for a dedicated cheapie USB key to keep in a drawer.

Autorun.inf Editor for Autoplay CD

The Autorun.inf Editor is a program that can be used to quickly and easily create the files that tell an autorun (also known as "autoplay") CD to automatically play upon insertion into a CD-ROM drive. This "autorun.inf" file is required when creating an autorun CD, since it is the file which signals the computer that the CD is autorun-enabled. When a CD is put into the drive, the operating system looks for the autorun.inf file. If the file exists, it reads the file and then knows how to "autoplay" the CD. There are a number of things you can do with an autorun.inf file. For more information click here.

There is no shareware fee or licensing required to use and/or distribute this program. This Editor was created as a free utility to make it easy for people to generate their own autorun.inf files. With the Editor, you can create a file that can:
 • Set a label for the CD (this label will be displayed in My Computer and Explorer on a Windows computer)
 • Set an icon for the CD
 • Specify a program on the CD (or user's computer) to run when the CD is inserted
 • Add various entries and commands to the context menu for when a user right-clicks on the CD
CLICK HERE to download the freeware.

Sounds like a good program, and I congratulate the author, but a lot of folks either turn off autoplay or set the default action to "Ask me" after the Sony debacle of a few years ago and the prevalence of malware now.

A shame, but that seems to be the way of the world we live in.

I agree, however when its a known good cd/dvd it can be good to have the option for it to show up from the right click menu.

Seems to me that loads of freeware tries to smuggle that and yahoo toolbar onto your sytem.
You have to be real eagle eyed to spot the little tick boxes as you install stuff like ccleaner and cpu-z otherwise they're all over you like a rash.
Are they that desparate?

Video: Give XCopy a graphical interface with this free download | TR Dojo | TechRepublic.com
Overview: The XCopy command has risen from the ashes of deprecation to save you time and make your file management tasks easier. This tool automates the process for XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
Many Windows power users were more than a little annoyed when Xcopy was deprecated in Windows Vista in favor of RoboCopy–especially those with lots of scripts that made use of Xcopy. Luckily, Xcopy is back in Windows 7 and TechRepublic blogger Greg Shultz has updated his Xcopy tool to work automatically in Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. During this episode of TR Dojo, I show you how to download, install, and use this free tool.
