I don't like those type of place... they tend to be the type that sends you free stuff for your personal information, which they sell to other telemarketers which send more spam and more personal data mining requests your way...

Actually, you don't need to give out any info to download from GOTD. On rare occasion you'd have to give an email for them to send the activation key, but that's from the particular software company of the program itself, not GOTD. it's been around awhile, has a pretty good reputation. I've been using GOTD for a long time, never have gotten any sudden explosion of spam since using it.

Sometimes they'll have something good, not very often though.

GOTD is fine and safe. Only once in a while will there be software that you actually want, but I have discovered at least 2 gems (Returnil - a sandbox tool, and Inpaint - a seriously excellent tool for removing objects from images).

The drawback is that your free app will only last as long as your first install - there's no second install.

I''d suggest you don't read the comments too much that they have for each offer, some seriously idiotic things said there. It'll drive you mad.

Have you verified this by experimentation? I'm asking because that's what I thought, but the last software I got from there, I noticed the "install" sent to GOTD site to verify you made the deadline, then sent to the developer site for license key/user id/whatever. I'm wondering if there may be an installer downloadable from the developer site on some of these, that would still take the keys/ids?

I have backup image so I'm not that concerned but it would seem silly not to validate the license once issued(since many of these copy protect schemes make a unique id from crap on your machine they should be able to tell if you're just installing to the same PC.)

I've also had the site bookmarked for some time. As to whether personal data is required, that normally depends on where the software is coming from.
But , imo , the site only amounts to a redirection page to the software principals. Admittedly this does save browsing time though. Any software I have collected from the site has been a demo or a very short time expiry release. All, if found by browsing, are available without the help of GOTD.

davehc: that's not my experience at all. Over a couple of years and maybe a dozen downloads not a single app was either a demo or an expiry release. Some, it is true, were nearly indistinguishable from the free version available at the maker's site. But ALL were fully functional licenced software.
And amongst the dross were some gems.
The other thing is that some of the offers were available elsewhere in the time frame for free, but most are not (as far as i can tell).

Milesahead: No I haven't, never needed to (I bought the one piece of software I really liked when it had a new version), but judging by some of the statements in the comments, it must be hard to do - tho on a few occasions I saw comments that the non-standard GOTD registration was usable after the "deadline"

Today´s free application is a Gem!

Hi guys. Just downloaded and installed todays free application from GOTD. It´s "Sothink SWF Quicker". Been playing with it now half an hour, it´s really easy to use and nice Flash-editor / creator. Works fine with W7.

I recommend. You have to download and install it before 9 AM Central European Time (UTC +1) tomorrow morning. You can calculate your deadline from that timezone.

Yeah, I tried it, its really good :D and its free! See, sometimes they have something you can use. ;)

I also use the give away of the day site frequently.

On rare occasions there is some very good software from reputable companies.

However, after doing some research, Giveawayoftheday.com is basically a marketing site that relies on hits to update their ranking.

98% of the software comes from easter European countries. Most of the so-called developers use an affiliate program from a major company and repackage the software under their company name, changing the interface. Some don't even bother to use a translater to the English language and there are oftern spelling mistakes on the site and in the programs also.

I've done research using domaintools.com and see that the website was just established very recently.

Yes, the comments are ridiculous, I go there for a good laugh and collect the links to alternate freeware and open source software that does a better job than the program they are featuring for the day.

It's almost always a thumbs down for the program, some are so simplistic and childish is ridiculous.

But Giveawayoftheday day could care less as they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Today's offering, however, is excellent.
