Curious problem that I have never encountered - I've done a clean install of Windows 7 on a laptop; when I start it, it gets to the Starting Windows and the logo starts forming, then it freezes and will not go further until I press any key. Then it will unfreeze and boot normally and everything works. Has anyone ever seen that before? I cannot find a fix for it so any help would be useful.

Yes, I have tried that but did not work. I also ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow. The same thing happens when I boot into safe mode - it gets to the end of loading, screen freezes, press any key and it boots.

Have you installed any software on the Laptop yet? If so, then maybe a Clean Startup would further assist .

Otherwise, check the health of the HDD using Hard Disk Sentinel , or similar.

I'll try a clean startup; the disk is a brand new SSD that is working perfectly.

Just tried the clean startup, same thing happens. It hangs shortly after the logo starts forming.

Hi,

Do you have any peripherals connected to the computer? Unplug anything except keyboard and mouse, such as memory sticks, printers, headphones, and switch off wifi, before preceding to start the machine.

Well, it's a laptop so nothing was/is connected although WiFi was on. I've pretty much given up as the problem is minor and only requires the pressing of any key to unfreeze, but thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated. It never ceases to amaze me that the problems encountered with different OS's could be so unique, no matter how long I've been doing this.
