Freezing computer now cant find C drive- death iminent

A couple of days ago mycomputer running win7 began to freeze regularly. Like every 20 mins or so.
Now it stalls at the Opening Windows page.
I have installed the windows recovery disk and it has tried to repair itself to no avail.
I have also tried system restore but it cannot located something to restore from.
My computer hard drive is partitioned into drive c and drive d.
I am at the c prompt and can see drive D but not drive C.

Can anyone offer some assistance suggesting how I might be able to get the files off the disk.
I just dont know what to do.

Unfortunately I havent been able to complete a backup in a long time because it would stop after hours and hours and tell me there was a error because a file was in use..bla blah.

Welcome to the forum. You say your at a c prompt you could try booting then from cmd prompt type chkdsk c: /r it could be the parition gone or the disk died
