Solved Freezing mouse pointer

Not really sure where this goes but....

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. In the last couple of days, my mouse pointer momentarily freezes, for no more than a second each time it does it. At the same time, I hear a "tee-dunk" tone from the speakers. I have looked in Task Manager at all the processes running and checked them all online to see what they are. They are all processes that are supposed to be there. I use Microsoft Security Essentials daily and it hasn't found anything. Outside of being bothersome, this hasn't caused anything to slow down, so I am at a loss. Any ideas on what to look for?

I had the same problem with my logitech mouse freezing momentarily.
The solution for me was to remove the KB2305420 Windows update and the problem went away.

Welcome to the forum guys/gals and Happy New Year!

ruff, update #KB2305420 is apparently an important security update. You might want to check out this information Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-092 - Important: Vulnerability in Task Scheduler Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2305420) from Microsoft and see if you want to reinstall the update. You might've merely had a corrupted download, rather than a conflict with something in your system.

cheezit, the next obvious question is, have you downloaded update KB2305420, and if so, why don't you try uninstalling and reinstalling it, to see if that's what's causing your problem.

If not, check back, and we can make some other suggestions.

PS If you decide to uninstall and reinstall the update, when you do so, be sure to first close EVERYTHING that's running: all browsers, apps, programs, messengers, screens --- everything!

What brand of mouse? Stock? Logitech or other.

Logitech for instance may need drivers updated.

I don't have that update, probably because my mouse is a Microsoft Optical corded USB mouse.

I discovered that when the pointer was frozen I could bang the mouse on the desk and it would unfreeze. I bought a new mouse and that seems to have taken care of the problem.

My story: I updated to Windows 8 from XP when they were offering the $40 get it now deal. (I was hoping to get the 64bit version, but they detected that I had the 32bit XP, so that is what Win 8 version they gave me to download--maybe that is all my system can handle...but, I digress...). Ever since I installed Window 8, my mouse would do exactly what cheezit said his did. His is the only exact description I found to my mouse's malady when I researched what the problem could be. That's why I registered to this Windows 7 forum instead of the Windows 8 one.

I just had my wife read this and she suggested that my mouse might just be too old and is having conflicts with the new Windows OS. This seems reasonable. My computer system is ~8 years old.

Any help with this, please?

Is this tone you hear the same as the tone you get when you plugin or unplug a USB device? The Mouse may be loosing the connection momentarily. Can you test a different USB mouse?

Thanks for the reply.

The sound is not the same as a new device sound. I just rooted around my spare computer parts for another IR mouse and found 2, but they were both with the green serial (I think) round connectors. When I pulled out the USB mouse that I am currently using, the sound was slightly different. I plugged in one of the round connector mice, but it didn't work. I may need to power down the computer and switch mice before it will recognize the other one. Also, the sound does not accompany the mouse freezing behavior every time the mouse freezes. The mouse freezes often, but only for up to a second--still noticeable and annoying. Nothing else seems to freeze, or skip, when this happens--not videos, or music.
If The mice I found won't work, I will try one from my son's computer or buy a new one and try it.
