Freezing problem

Hello,

I've recently had a freezing problem in windows 7, usually/always when using the hard drive. When running a diagnostic on the HDD it came up with SMart, Long, Short DST fails so, presuming the problem was this I returned the HDD under warranty to Samsung. However upon transferring my data back from my external today, the same freeze happened, with a slight graphic jarring as well.

Any ideas what else could be causing this? Really annoyed because I was so sure it was the HDD failing!

Thanks
Josh

being completely honest I'm not sure what could be causing this of the top of my head but i would possibly do a virus\malware scan on the external drive with it happening on 2 drives (always nice to be sure).

if i think of anything else i will pop back :)

Thanks, yeah i've run a virus scan and nothing's come up. Really annoying problem because it doesn't freeze unless I use the HDD, yet I've just got a new one!

Are you still working from a factory install, or an in-place Upgrade to Win7 from Vista? How was Win7 applied to new HD? You really need a clean install to wiped HD to know it's not OS.

Test your RAM with memtest86 for 5-6 passes or overnight to really stress test it. Swap and reseat RAM sticks. Swap out cables to make sure they're good.

Study the Event Viewer>Admin view to google repeat errors to find how others have resolved them. Do the same within Performance Log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking WEI score at Computer>Properties. Check also for cued issues at top of Tools page, then Generate a System Health report there.

Compare the drivers offered on the maker's Suppport Downloads webpage with those in Device Manager to try newer or different drivers - you can always roll back on Driver update tab

Continue troubleshooting with Tech Support as you want to benefit from parts replacements to have it sorted well before warranty expires.

Try running 'chkdsk' and then 'defrag' and let it mend your scrambled files!

Could be dodgy or misaligned cable.

Go around everything in the pc and push their electric and data cables into their sockets inc motherboard-psu

I presume you swapped out data leads

Also pull out and reseat any graphic cards/other - make sure sockets are clear of a stray hair etc
