Freezing/shutdown problem when transfer files

Hi, i posted this in the networking section but didnt get anywhere so hopefully someone here has some ideas.


My HTPC has a 2 TB drive for backing up media from my main computer. Whenever i begin copying data from the main computer over the home network onto the 2TB drive, about 5-15 mins later, the HTPC freezes for about 20 seconds and then turns off.

The problem is not heat/ventilation related, and i have tried two different PSUs and various ram configurations. This does NOT happen when the HTPC is in safe mode, and i currently have a fresh virgin installation of windows with only the motherboard drivers installed. Both PCs are running Windows 7 64 Home premium.


Please help i am so bewildered.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, i am at the verge of buying a new mobo. =(

Lot's of issues of this sort on Google.
Install ALL Windows updates, and carefully read the Important Updates and Optional Updates for those that refer to issues with large hard drives.

I have fully upgraded windows 7 64 bit and the problem still persists. I followed your instructions and zipped the two files that you asked for.

The USB 3.0 controller on your system has seen some issues in the past - and there are no more recent drivers available for it. Please disable USB 3.0 support in your Device Manager.

The System Event Log shows difficulties in starting your CDROM drivers. Please disable the CDROM's in Device Manager and see if that helps.

The Application Event Log shows difficulties with the Volume Shadow Service locating your hard drive (only once tho').

MSINFO32 shows difficulties with your keyboards - both a Logitech and a Zippy. Try a generic keyboard without any extra software being installed.

On March 7 at 9:48am you had some issues with the following devices:
Your USB 3.0 Controller
Your Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Family Controller
Your Intel Management Engine Interface Driver, and
Your Intel Q57/H55 Clarkdale chipset

A lot of different problems with one common connection - the motherboard.
So, let's first start with these free diagnostics and stress tests:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Scanners (read the details at the link)

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:

FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
NOTE: Set the alarm to go off at 90ºC. Then watch the system from that point on. If the system doesn't display a temperature, watch it constantly and turn it off at the first sign of video problems. DO NOT leave it it unmonitored, it can DAMAGE your video card!!!
- Click "Quit" to exit

Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight please run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
