I have been experiencing freezes and crashes for the last 6 months. I have upgraded to Win 7 Pro from XP Pro hoping that would solve the problem, but it continued. I have run memory test which did not yield anything. I have received errors ranging from IRQL to Memory manager to system thread exception. I have a device manager installed and all my drivers are up to date. I also run System Mechanic Pro which corrects hard drive errors that occur nearly everyday. Could I have a corrupt driver? I am at a loss as to what I should try next. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Dont place acronis on startup .... free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
Do you have any program like FileDisc Virtual Disc by iolo Technologies? If so, uninstall it. This driver FileDisc.sys is causing some crashes there, apparently.

Also, the zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

I have removed everything from start up and restarted.
Could not find any FileDisc Virtual Disc by iolo.
I have attached my zipped file, which hopefully have the mini dumps, and also added the diagnostic report below. (I have captured my last 3 crashes using WhoCrashed and copied these in Word if you need that).

I purchased it from an online company SoftBuy. They offered a downloadable version and appeared to have a reputable business, with a Microsoft and Adobe certification. The problem is I had all these crashes before I purchased the Win 7. In fact, I had crashed with XP and could not get it restarted after trying many different options. Therefore, I purchased Win 7, installed it on a new internal hard drive, and was able to access, save my files, and begin running again.

My best advice at this point would be, save all of your files that you want to an external drive then purchase a new copy of windows, from a reputable dealer, Unfortunately this may not be exactly cheap, then format your drives and reinstall windows, hacked copies of windows can cause all sorts of odd problems and can make the trouble shooting process nearly impossible because you are battling with an unpredictable operating system.

Ugh. OK, then. I am worn out fighting this for last 6 months.

I recently bought a 1TB external drive, so I am set there.

Is the controversy over retail version versus system builder settled? Is it O.k. to buy a system builder copy? I had my computer built by a friend and do not plan to resell it.

Thanks.

Now as I understand it this is the difference between a rtail copy of windows and an oem copy of windows:

OEM is a full version of Windows and doesn't require a previous copy of Windows, but it is meant for system builders who sell computers. If you're an end user you should buy a retail copy.
Products - Microsoft Store Online

Difference Between a Full/Upgrade/Retail License and an OEM/System Builder License.
OEM licenses of Windows:
1) Are bound to the first computer installed on and are not transferable (can't be moved to a different computer).
2) Can not do an in place upgrade from older versions of Windows, only a clean/fresh install is possible.
3) Offer no free support from Microsoft.

I ran the validate program from Microsoft and it is telling me I have a genuine copy. Also, I clicked on the Activate Windows Dialog box and it was successful, along with the genuine windows logo. Going to control panel, system, it shows windows is activated, with product id and genuine software logo.

So, why do you suspect it is a counterfeit copy?

Because you have an OEM mother mother board, yet your windows license is for an Acer/Packard/ Gateway made computer, hence illegal copy of windows/

Gotcha. I bought a actual disc copy of Win 7, downloaded it, and so far, no more crashes.
