While looking through autoruns, I noted that the Asus updater and asloader were already disabled. On the off chance that this was causing something to be missing that was required, I enabled them. This caused BSODs to be much more frequent, so I turned them back off.

OK. Now I've updated Asus: Coll and Quiet, EPU-4, ProbeII and the chipset.

I still get a bsod within minutes if I try to make a dvd. Here's the latest.

more stability

Hmmm. Although it will still bsod if I try to cut a dvd within 10 minutes, if I stay away from that, I've been browsing for a few hours without it crashing. And I've been able to leave it on unattended for a couple of hours without returning to a blue screen.

I'm thinking that there were more than one problem. One of them, I believe, was connected with the system going to low-power mode, which I disabled. The other is starting to look like it may be related to DVDs. I'm going to make a full CD instead to see if that behaves differently.

Hmm. I've been using the computer for the whole afternoon without a bsod when it used to occur several times in that time. I've even created a full CD with no problems. Now I'm going to try another DVD, just to confirm that it hasn't gone away by itself.

Added later: sure enough, attempting to create a DVD crashed it. I'll post the minidump tomorrow.

later: added minidump

Both dumps report stop error codes of A. One of them still points to amdppm as the cause.
STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility
Did you try to up date this driver?

AtiPcie.sys Tue May 05 11:00:22 2009 - ATI PCIE Driver for ATI PCIE chipsetGlobal Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD

I believe it was suggested that you uninstall the software, Microsoft IntelliType Pro / IntelliPoint. I still find this driver which is associated with it:

NuidFltr.sys Fri May 08 04:53:31 2009

This driver is very obsolete:

SSPORT.sys Thu Aug 11 19:07:32 2005 - 32bit Port Contention Driver or SSPORT belongs to the software SSPORT or Port Contention Driver by Samsung Electronics. Uninstall this software.

If I could figure out what supplies amdpp.sys, I'd try to update it, but I can't figure that out.

According to the control panel, "Microsoft IntelliType Pro / IntelliPoint" are not installed, so I have no idea how to uninstall them. Should I re-name the NuidFltr.sys file so that windows can't find it?

Similarly, the only Samsung item showing in control panel is the "Samsung Universal Print Driver". I couldn't get my ML-1740 printer to work without it. Should I try renaming ssport.sys?

Yes, try renaming NuidFltr.sys to NuidFltr.bak and ssport.sys to ssport.bak. C:\windows\Syestem32\Drivers. You are correct; your printer will most likely not run without ssport.sys. I cannot track down any information on amdpp.sys either, except that it is an AMD driver. After you rename the drivers, reboot and we will see what happens.

Yes, try renaming NuidFltr.sys to NuidFltr.bak and ssport.sys to ssport.bak. C:\windows\System32\Drivers. You are correct; you printer will probably not run without ssport.sys. After you have renamed these drivers, reboot and lets see what happens.

I cannot find anything on amdpp.sys either, except that it is an AMD driver. You might go to the AMD site and ask their tech support for help/guidance with this driver.

Hi Johnathan.

Thanks, but I've already seen that page. Nothing there for win7 Athlon 64bit claims to be what I would call a processor driver. In any case, the amdppm.sys file I have is from 2009-07-13, which is more recent than any of them. They are:

renaming

I've renamed NuidFltr.sys to NuidFltr.bak and ssport.sys to ssport.bak. It's not been long enough to tell for sure, but it may be a bit more stable.

However, it will still crash if I try to create a dvd.

Interestingly, at least to me, printing still works, even with ssport.sys renamed.

I've included the latest minidump.

I notice that NuidFltr.sys and SSPORT.sys are still showing as loaded on your system. Did you reboot after you renamed them or is this dump from before you renamed them?

Back on the first page, I noticed that you had renamed secdrv.sys.
- disabled (renamed) secdrv.sys as it doesn't sound like anything I want/need
I suggest you reenable this one. It is an MS driver and even though it has a date of 2006, it is OK.

Have you ever run an upgrade compatibility check for your computer? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

renaming and compatibility

Hmm. I was sure I had renamed ssport.sys, but I was wrong. I have now.

Re nuidfltr.sys: I had renamed and rebooted when I got this bsod. Doing another search, I found that there is another copy of it in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nuidfltr.inf_amd64_neutral_fb85db36de8d50f2. However, when I try to rename it I get an error saying "You require permission from SYSTEM to make changes this file".

I've run the upgrade advisor before with nothing interesting showing up. I've just run it again and it says that it doesn't know about the Epson Perfection1200 scanner or Microsoft Office 2000. It claims that GIMP 2.6.8 is incompatible with win7, but I've been running it with no problems.

At least we know your hardware compatible. Have you gotten another BSOD?

I would attach the minidump except I don't have that link any more. Maybe I uploaded too much?

renamed niudfltr.sys sort-of

After searching the net, I finally found instructions on how to deal with the "you need permission from SYSTEM..." message. Unfortunately, even after applying those instructions to the folder it was in, I still couldn't rename nuidfltr.sys. I did get a different message saying that I needed permission from Owner, i.e. the admin user I was running as.

So I renamed the folder, since there wasn't much in it, and we'll see what happens.
