frequent random BSODs

I would attach the minidump except I don't have that link any more. Maybe I uploaded too much?

I don't understand what you are saying here. What link did you lose? You upload the mini dumps just as you did before.

After searching the net, I finally found instructions on how to deal with the "you need permission from SYSTEM..." message. Unfortunately, even after applying those instructions to the folder it was in, I still couldn't rename nuidfltr.sys. I did get a different message saying that I needed permission from Owner, i.e. the admin user I was running as.

So I renamed the folder, since there wasn't much in it, and we'll see what happens.

OK, let us know how that turns out.

I have the section below labelled "Attach Files" with a list of valid file extensions. However, there is no link to click on to upload. There used to be, but no more.

Never mind: I'm using firefox with the noscript addon. The upload script comes from sevenforums.com where I had only allowed Windows 7 Forums. Mea culpa.

Here's the minidump.

This one shows stop error code A which points to hardware; but unfortunately, it does not pinpoint the problem.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000004510, memory referenced
Arg2: 000000000000000d, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :
    bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff80002ae5980, address which referenced memory

Wow - this is the second dump I've seen today where a clock interrupt was in a bugcheck callstack. However, I'm not sure this one is a bad hardware dump - it's more likely a kernel filter driver is corrupting the ready thread on one of the CPUs, and given this check is run at HIGH_PRIORITY, any failure in looking up the ready thread on ISR wake will cause a bugcheck.

I've looked at the other dumps, and they're basically all failures on some sort of DPC timer, and most of them have corruption. However, assuming the RAM in that machine checks out, you probably will need to enable special pool and get another dump to pinpoint the driver causing the thread corruption.

"special pool"?

hi cluberti:

You said:
"you probably will need to enable special pool and get another dump to pinpoint the driver causing the thread corruption."

I'm up for trying different stuff, but I have no clue what you mean by this.

The AtiPcie.sys should have been replaced when I updated the ati video drivers, which I did a while ago. I think. Otherwise, I don't know what they belong to.

I've renamed DgiVecp.sys since, from your description, I don't need it. There's going to be a long cleanup if I need to enable all these renamed files.

AtiPcie.sys is part of the ATI chipset. I don't know what it's function is. Did you update the whole chip set or just the video portion? Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD

Sorry, good point - special pool can be enabled with driver verifier. See this KB - basically, you do the Standard Settings, All Drivers.

Thanks, that tells me that the AtiPcie.sys driver is most likely not a vital part of the chipset. How is your system running now?

more stable

Thanks to all the help from y'all, my system is more stable.

However, I can still make it bsod any time I want by running the windows dvd creator. In fact, that's what brought the seriousness of this problem up: I wanted to make a dvd. I still can't, but at least it won't crash any more if it leave it alone for an hour and I can work from home all day without a bsod. This is a good thing.

I just wish I could figure out this last piece.

Thargas, I am glad it is running better; but we would like to seeing running smoothly with no problems. The next time you try burn a DVD and it crashes, post the mini dump. With the changes you have made, maybe we can spot something we missed.

Do follow Jonathan's advice and run SFC /scannow.

I see that your ATI video card drivers are a year out of date. I know there was a new version released in June or July, so please install it: Graphics Drivers & Software

graphic drivers and stuff

Hi Johnathan.

I have already run the update for the graphic drivers, so I'm surprised to hear you say that they're out of date. I'll try re-installing them, but I'm not hopeful.

I've already run the win7 upgrade advisor with no interesting results. I.E. it says my hardware and sfotware ore fine.

The last three times I tried turning it on I got a bsod very quickly as I was starting firefox. However, this time, it's fine, so far.

stress tests

ok. I tried two different tests.

First, I tried the recommended prime95 test. Within 15 minutes the temperature was up to 71C and I chickened out, though it hadn't bsod'd.

Then I ran my guaranteed bsod'er: Windows DVD Creator. The temperature got up to 54C and it bsod'd.

I'm concerned about the 71C as I don't think it should be going that high even under load. However, the temperature doesn't seem to be the trigger.

Would you post the last BSOD you got when running the DVD Creator?

Yes, do upload the new dump.

Try opening the side of your case and blowing a fan inside.
