Fresh 7 install, go to install applications, 3 out of many, fouled.

OK Windows 7 Ultimate reinstall, have done this numerous times, but this time, a new wrinkle:

Happened with these 3:
WinPatrol
OpenOffice
and a disk imaging tool:

Once install completed, the desktop icon gives access denied, I am on the only acct that I created and it's obviously an admin acct.

I know how to fix it, but why has basically NO PERMISSIONS been setup? [installed these apps before]

I look at the drive in explorer, and three directories are showing LOCKS with the folder symbol.

Is there some services to adjust or disable that is doing this to me?
It's a totally new issue, I have not encountered before, and I have wipe and dropped 7 at least 7 times and set it up from scratch each time same as now.

Only thing of note, maybe, apps being installed to reformatted old SSD.
Using NTFS on all partitions.
Ran chkdsk /f and drive has no issues.

I have UAC, Windows Firewall, and Defender all disabled and did during the installs that fouled up, these are things I don't use.

Well, thought about it some more, I took ownership of the 3 directories on the root of F: and it went through cmd prompt to adjust them and every file within, and those 3 directories in root of F: had locks that I didn't see anything obvious to get rid of them, were set as READ ONLY, removing that did nothing, I made 3 new directories and shuffled them all over and rebooted, and no more locks nonsense.

Still want to know what would do that in the first place. *BUGS?!*

Where did you get Win7?

Use the latest official ISO with SP1 from Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and follow those same steps (even for retail) to get and keep a perfect install.

Run all rounds of Important and Optional Updates with requested reboots to make sure you have drivers, performance and security updates.

I'd also wipe the HD first using Diskpart Clean Command and leave all other HD's and peripherals unplugged.

LOL Greg, it's my Retail 7 Ultimate, I first used one of those SP1 discs thinking to save some time and it was WORSE, see other thread I made recently, for details.

Very confused how 7 could randomly be locking directories on a fresh install.
I am using Webroot's suite for firewall and anti...

You want to use the latest official installer with SP1.

Then if you've wiped the HD using Diskpart Clean Command and followed all of the collected Best Practices in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (same for retail) I would suspect Webroot's suite. Can you System Restore to before you installed it and run with recommended MSE for awhile?

Make sure from the link's steps you have established and maintain a Clean Boot as shown. If it resolves it then it was one of the startup freeloaders which stlll may cause problems when you start it Manually.

I had already redone it all before you replied Greg:

Uh greg, no, I already did the DVD with SP1 and that was a disaster, I now am fine with Windows Update adding SP1 with my safe original install disc, did tons of updates, so far no weirdness again.

GREG, the install was onto a BRAND NEW SSD!
Which after the disaster install, I wiped it with a Linux Install, then wiped it out again with the 2nd 7 install.

All I want to know now is wth would have selectively screwed up permissions on the app installs?
All I can figure is bugs with the install code of the apps? Just didn't finish that little piece properly, had no owner at all.

I think the Webroot wasn't even active yet for at least one install, but it's a thought, but still don't know why that would do anything related to permissions and give me no messages whatsoever.

My point was only that if you wiped the HD of any possibly interfering code, then followed the Clean Reinstall practices, such an anomaly would have to be caused by something you installed and the first suspect would be the AV. That's why I suggested if it persists to kill all Startups, try another AV, then if necessary Restore to before you installed anything and if the problem goes away reinstall each program with enough time in between to see if it is the cause. This could also be done from a fresh reinstall.

But if the problem is resolved you don't need to do any of this. I don't know what caused it, just how I would approach troubleshooting it if it happened to me on a Clean Install.

Are you certain that all of your cables (and RAM) are properly seated in their sockets?
Maybe something came loose when you were installing your new SSD.

SATA connections don't fill me with confidence.

Oh believe me, that was already gone through, I haven't had an issue since that mess, and I moving files to a newly created directory, got totally rid of the locked directory nonsense. I had gone in and took ownership, any way.

Still puzzled on what did it, but this system has now been rebooted 20+ times and drivers seem to be all on good behavior.

Just for the hell of it, I did install Malwarebytes' and full scanned both SSD's, no issues.

I use Win Optimizer 10 and Boost Speed for tweaking, and let them tell me what they advised, and handled it appropriately, those suites fighting against each other if you do too many is funny, one doesn't like the others' internet settings for instance and definitely look over any registry *adjustments*, backed up all that stuff including drivers, if I have to restore to a more virginal point.

System is running great now.
