Fresh install what updates to avoid

I'm just about to under take a fresh install of Win 7 x64 for my m8 and wanted to know are there still updates to avoid if i want to stay away from the Win 10 hole, or should i just install the GXW Control Panel and let that do its work, he would like as many updates as poss (so that includes a lot of the optional ones) but i know some are to be avoided.

At the Windows Updates page, go to "Change settings" on left panel.
Ensure "Install updates automatically (recommended)" is select.
As for Install new updates "Every day" and the time "xxx"
The Time should be when you are using the computer or at times leave it on (not necessary all the time).
Also ensure the computer internet is active during the period.
The default setting is that Microsoft /Windows consider that computer are running 24/7 (non stop).
As for Recommended updates & who can install updates; both should be tick mark on the box.
I would recommended to this as i do not need to manually do click to windows updates anymore.

For start, after doing the necessary setting, and need to prepare to let it run accordingly.
Imitate "Check for updates", and after this try not to use your this computer.
Some updates will reboot and continue to download and updating.
This will take a lot of time.

For Windows 10, if it is downloaded, do not click "Get started" as this give permission to upgrade.

So far using these settings, i do not face any problem in the system.
Do note, when you want to shutdown, or restart, if there is "Update and shutdown" on the Shutdown box, do the updates.
Even if you do encountered if you just want to reboot, updates are important.

I no longer see any updates that required me to use my fingers.

Alloneword, if you want to avoid installing any Windows 10 related updates, I would suggest you don't have WU set to Automatically install.
Set it to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install"
Also, untick the box "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important"

I skip a lot more updates, but those don't relate to 10.
Or you could install them all and use GWX control panel, as Eric stated. Personally, I'd rather not install them in the first place as I have no intention of installing Windows 10. And some will most likely be removed after the free upgrade period has ended.

Thanks for thr answers guys, I do turn off all windows updates nowadays, however the list you have given me is perfect.

Mind you having said all ths it would be so nice if MS would allow me to update the damm machine i have been trying differnt way for 2 days and still get stuck with usual "Checking for updates" i have seen so many so called fixes i'm lost for words, anyone would think MS didin't want you to have a fresh copy of win 7 onboard, no they won't do that would they?

I installed the June rollup update a couple of weeks ago:

that has this fix

An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers.

Last month it took me over 6 hours to check for PT updates.
This month it took a couple of minutes to check for PT updates.

You need to check the prerequisites to see if you can manually install this update(s).

PrerequisitesTo apply this update, you must install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB3020369).

This is the first "fix" i've seen offered from MS for long scan times.

This WU fix worked for me, ymmv.
