frustrated with dial-up broadband

this is driving me nuts. things were ok in 7100, then in later builds my dial-up broadband connection didn't remember my password so i had to connect with a batch file.

now, the password sticks, but the dialup won't connect automatically. if i do nothing, about a minute after i boot suddenly skype kicks in the dialup and things connect after about 30 seconds of spinning. this is fine if i power up then go make some coffee or something, but it's torture if i'm sitting there waiting to get online.

what can i do to speed things up? i want to connect on boot...

well, if you want to spend some money buying a hardware solution, i would invest in an adsl broadband modem/router.

these devices are generally left on 24/7 and connect to your pc by a network cable - so you are connected as soon as you turn on your computer.

another advantage is that many pc's can connect too - wirelessly too if you get the right router...

By dialup broadband do you mean asdl, or pppoe? I haven't heard of asdl thats 30Mb/20Mb so whats the setup?

Not dial up then right. Probably PPPOE. where does your cable go to outside? to you have a router, or modem?

as he says that he have to dial to connect to internet so i guess he is using his telephone line to connect to internet.

You know I dont think either of us knows. He says dial up. Ok I have never seen dial up (adsl) at 30Mb/20Mb. He says He has an ethernet cable. Dsl uses pots cable. Im trying to pin down what he has, where he puts the uid and pword.

I have a high speed internet connection. But whenever i turn on my pc, i have to open my browser to login to ISP page using the user ID and Pswd, after logging in, i can browse the internet. And when i shut down my pc, i click the logoff button.

haha ok guys i'm back.

as i said, no modem. there is a literally an ethernet cable coming through a hole in the wall from outside in the hall, and i plug it straight into my computer. not sure where it goes from there. i think they wired the whole building before we moved in, then when i signed up, they just connected me into the system.

when i say 'dial' i don't mean it literally. i just have to sign in every time i boot.

PPPOE sounds familiar, i think when i set it up that's what i had to choose...

edit - no dinesh, i don't have to log on to my isp's page to sign in. that's why i used the phrase 'dial up'. it reminds me of an actual modem dial up dialog box...

edit2 - back in build 7229 when my password wouldn't stick, i used a batch file with the rasdial command to connect. dunno if that helps? i guess i could use that again, but i was hoping for a more 'elegant' solution

Maybe dial up means different things. To me it means you put in a phone number right below the user id and password, and it dials a telephone number (adsl). Hey in any case he just needs to know how to have it auto logon right?

It isn't a dial up connection...I have a lady that I consult for and she has to connect to her broadband by using the dial up dialog...Verizon also uses this to diagnose broadband issues regularly...I am guessing that his builiding is routed somewhere in a mainframe to give people an internet connection. I would recommend buying a router and setting it up as PPPoE...should connect with no issue

Chris I knew it wasn't dial up (having done that for years) more than anything else its probalby already PPPOE, because its asking for uid and pword, and uses ethernet cable. thats why I asked if he had a modem (not 56K) and a router.

Yeah I knew that Ken...someone else mentioned that it was dial up and I had to clarify...

No biggie I didn't take it as anything harsh...anyways I really think getting a mode would be the best solution here...modems are invaluable as we are going completey broadband and that batch file that the OP might not work anymore if Microsoft changed how bootup works in seven in later builds. If anything make sure that the batch file is set to run as an administrator...also try to disable everything that is automatically starting uo besides the batch file...just to see if it is even working

jeepers, i think you guys are making this a bigger issue than it really is. i can connect just fine, i just have to initiate the connection after i boot. i was only hoping for a way to automate it so connecting to the network was part of the boot process. the batch file i made does just that, so i'll just keep using it.

LOL I thought the batch stopped working...why not add the batch as a startup program?
