Is FSX good or should I set my sights elsewhere.

Exactly.

Is it a good simulator? Yes.

Does it play well with Windows 7? Mileage may vary. It crashes often for me.

Will it run well on the hardware in your specs? No. It's a very heavy CPU orientated game and you'd need to lower quite a few, if not most details to get it to run smoothly.

FSX is a great simulator. smarteyball is all too right tho, its heavy on the cpu. i was running an amd athlon II x2 215 @2.7ghz and had to lower the graphics pretty well and use the lowest resolution to run smooth.

i just installed an amd phenom II x4 965 @3.4ghz and it ran FSX great!! i played on highest resolution tho and it was a slight bit choppy. nothing another vid card or slight better vid card couldn't fix tho im sure.

otherwise, its a great flight simulator tho

I bought FSX yesterday and now its here having used FS9 I knew whats what. The planes it comes with are no where near the amount I was hoping for. I found this site which has a vast library of planes. You can find it here. Simviation Freeware Addons for PC Flight Simulator. Flight Simulator X, FS2004 - Tens of Thousands of free high quality add-ons for Microsoft's Flight Simulator series and other PC Flight Simulators! Quality Freeware Add-ons and support!
I even got a dream liner in both Continental and British Airways textures!:D

I have 50 hours flying time and FSX is extremely real if you have the proper controls. I use the CH products flight sim yoke.

If you buy it get back to me and I will teach you how to perform an ILS landing which will greatly help you land the bigger planes such as the 747.

The game runs great on my computer.

1) You need to find the ILS radio freq. the best way to do this is to look at the map and double click on your runway of choice. This will give you the correct frequency for that runway if they have an ILS system.

2) Tune either Navigation(Nav) radios to that freq. and make sure you turn that radio on by clicking the button at the bottom of the Nav panel

3) you should here a beeping pattern which mean you have picked up the freq. when you are in close proximity to the runway.

4) Once you have a good approach for a runway and you at 5000 ft or less you can use the approach hold button in the autopilot panel.

5) The autopilot is very sensitive to how you line it up before you hit the button so if it doesn't work try it again. For best results you need to already have your speed, flaps, altitude, and direction set before turning the approach hold on.

The green ILS feathers on your gps will help you get lined up and your altitude hold should turn off right before you hit the arrow, your plane will descend on the proper glide path to the runway. Before you touch down it is recommended you turn autopilot off and manually land the plane for a smoother landing.

I have been having some trouble with this on the 747, The Learjet seems the work much better
