Full Retail Version of Pro For Students only 29.99

I called and bought two Pro versions...one for my wife and one for me. I paid the extra $5 to have the DVD sent. Guy said it would have both 32 and 64 bit on one disk.

Oh, and no, the download version is an .exe not an .iso. I would get the disk if I were you. The servers for downloading will probably be crazy, plus having it as an .exe vs an .iso is rather annoying.

Even with the downloaded version, why would you have to store it on a computer?

To my understanding, the download is only stored for a certain time frame. With digital river it is stored online for 30 days. Once downloaded I would have to burn a copy and keep that handy. Otherwise I would store it on an external.

Looking back I guess it would be ok to only have available as download but there is something about having a microsoft issued hardcopy that gives me a little more sense of security. I am a create of habit.

It only cost me an extra 8 bucks with shipping and tax.
What's the big deal about burning yourself a copy? If you burn yourself a copy from the "download" and verify the burn, it will be just as good as the disk they would be sending you. This is why I don't understand the concern. :)

Btw, the downloads of the various flavors of 7 available on Technet are iso's.

UK students can also get it for £30 if they have an ac.uk email address starting from today. http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/studentoffer/default.aspx

Think I will buy one today :p

I wonder if there is a way us UK Students can get the full version rather than "upgrade" - as per detailed in this thread for the US Students.

When I bought the Professional upgrade version yesterday it said I would have to do a fresh install as upgrade only works from Home Premium. The download is not available till the 22nd October so i won't know till then. I have an old copy of XP pro lying around but hopefully I won't have to install that first.

Having spent the morning reading around these forums (fantastic knowledge base by the way!) I think having the Pro-Upgrade disc will be fine.

Worst case scenario would appear to be using the "double install" method, which if I understand correctly means there are no real advantages to having a retail copy.

Ordered my copy for £30 this morning, dead happy :D

It's also possible that the activated RC will count as a qualifying OS for upgrade purposes. I recall hearing something about this, the idea being that MS wanted to do something to reward people who "helped" them by testing the RC. But no one will know for certain until the upgrade versions are released and people start trying to see what can and can't be done.

And then once one has the RTM of 7 installed (and activated, (or perhaps not activated, that remains to be determined)) that installation itself will surely act as a qualifying OS for future reinstalls using an upgrade version, and those installs can be either upgrade installs or clean installs. So I think it's likely that one way or another, there will be a way for just about anyone to make an upgrade version work for them.

the digital download will be an iso right? and is there any official sizes of the iso's for the different editions of the full version....

All their downloads to date (beta, RC, MSDN, Technet, etc.) have been iso's, but they could theoretically change that for the official release if they think too many people could get confused by the format.

Each install "disc" should be in the 3GB ballpark, but until they're out, no one will know the detailed sizes and other info.

so if one gets both versions 32/64 on disc... does that mean two different keys?

One key, unless it is an OEM copy.

No. One key. You just pick what to install. The key will work with either on one machine.

I would call dude. I think the Microsoft email guy is wrong. They told me on the phone repeatedly that the download is a .exe.....not an .iso.

this what I got as an answer from customer support when I emailed them

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Store Customer Care Team.

I appreciate the opportunity to assist you today. I understand you would like further information regarding the Windows 7 file formats that will be available when you have access to your download through Microsoft Store.

Windows 7 will be available in two file formats for download from Microsoft Store; both .ISO and .EXE. This will allow customers to create backup CDs as long as they know how to burn .ISO files.

The process of burning the .ISO file onto a CD is not something that will be supported by Microsoft Store.

I hope I was able to provide you with some helpful information.

If you have any further questions or wish to place an order you may do so online at Microsoft Store U.S. - Home or reach us by phone, Monday to Friday 8am to 1am EST and Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 12pm and 8pm EST. at 1-877-MY-MSSTORE (1-877-696-7786).

Thank you for using the Microsoft Store,

Either you can't exchange Windows 7 for something else or sell it on to someone else.

Just a guess.

You can't pass the deal for which you individually qualify onto someone else.

It's not like a coupon code that anyone can use, or where you can say "I'm not going to use this but my Uncle Bob would like it so I'll give him the coupon code instead."
