The extra ventilation will keep the inside pad from over heating. :p :geek:

I saw this same failure a little over 10 years ago on a Ford F250 with a 4-piston caliper. Glad it wasn't mine.

When they wear that far down the piston usually gets cocked in the caliper (the piston can no longer get "pushed" by the brake fluid) preventing any wheel lock up. I've also seen some instances where one pad is completely missing and the piston is rubbing on the rotor.
It's all about preventative maintainence.
