FYI: Extended Disc Cleanup has started killing recent Windows Updates

I've been using the new extended disk cleanup for over a year now with no problems. Occasionally it will find Windows Updates that have been superseded, and remove them. Yay!!

BUT, upon using Disk Cleanup yesterday, it removed 4 RECENT, REQUIRED updates that had to be re-installed.

It removed:
2 Windows Security Updates from February 2015 (KB3004375 and KB3031432)
1 IE Cumulative Update from February 2015 (KB3021952)
AND
1 IE Cumulative Update from March 2015 (only 2 days old) (KB3032359)

Even after reinstalling them, the 2 Security Updates did not "take" and had to be RE-RE-installed.

So, something has recently been broken as far as Disk Cleanup being able to reliably decide which updates are safe to delete.

-Win7 64-bit Home Premium
-AMD laptop that has previously never had any windows update problems or glitches

EDIT: more info for the truly interested, Windows "knew" the updates had been mistakenly removed, because immediately after rebooting, but before even having a network connection, WU appeared in the system tray and said "4 updates are available"

Yes, I have had the same problem. Those updates were installed in my case in Feb 15 & I ran Win Disc Clean Up yesterday & this morning Windows Updates reinstalled them again.

It seems that Update Clean Up may be removing some updates that it shouldn't or there is something in the updates that are not shielded from removal.

I will just keep this in mind for future reference, in case it happens again.

Disk Cleanup is definitely broken with these new updates. I guess it's a known issue now. My "Update History" was also wiped out, but "Installed Updates" still displays properly. Apparently, someone is looking into it.........

Yup. I have a topic @ M$ Answers Community, along with many others. KB's 3021952 & 3032359 "child" component KB3023607 (Patches "Poodle" TLS vuln, broke Cisco VPN's last month) removed by DeepClean. Also KB's 3033929 & 3035131 (Kernel Patch) FUBAR (not installing as described in FAQ's) KB3035131 removed by DeepClean on my system. Per MS MVP PaBear (Mr. "Blame it on the Norton")

  • As long as (a) KB3032359 is listed in Installed Updates and (b) you stop using the "deepclean" (Windows Update cleanup) option when running Disk Cleanup, neither KB3032359 nor KB3021952 should be offered again via Windows Update or Automatic Updates.
  • Alternately, you may hide KB3032359 & KB3021952 if still being offered as long as KB3032359 is already listed in Installed Updates
  • [No, I dunno how MS "broke" it (Mine: Windows Update Cleanup Detection logic) but they did. We'll just have to wait until they fix it.]
Other users reporting similar issues with other KB's.

HTH :)

I use Disk Cleanup and Updates Cleanup constantly on 4 machines. No such problems here.
Maybe just lucky.

I too have the same issue after running the disk cleanup utility with updates KB3004375 & KB3031432. Operating system is win7 home prem x64. I have installed the updates twice and they register as successful in the windows update log but the update utility still says they need to be installed. I have ran the miscrosoft windows update 'fix it' utility to no avail... An error in Microsoft coding of these updates most likely?

Until MS fix either the updates or DiskClean, that's the only option.
