If you have 3D acceleration enabled in VirtualBox 4.14, you can't access the chrome web store to add extensions for chromium or chrome for either Ubuntu 12.04 or Linux Mint 12 guests in VirtualBox 4.14.
If you want to add extensions to either chromium or chrome, before you start your VM, temporarily disable 3D acceleration in Settings>Display for your VM, and then add your extensions.
When done, you might want to re-enable 3D acceleration for your VM because some desktops don't behave well without 3D acceleration (Unity for Ubuntu and Cinnamon for Linux Mint, for example).
