I have a few applications and Win7 settings that start tasks as required:

NIS Scan
Spyware Doctor Scan
Win7 Image & Backup (real resource hog)
Defrag
etc

I know something is going on because the HDD light is 'giving it some' and performance is degraded.

I wonder if a Gadget is available that can show what is currently running, taking the resources?
