I have Google Now on my s-3 my question is ... should I still download Google Maps???

I think you still need Google Maps to search for navigation purpose.

As Dinesh said, if you want to actually use maps for directional purposes you'll need the app.
Google Now is more of a location awareness/personal news feed thing - it can tell you what restaurants are close by come lunch and dinner time, how long to get home from work, score for your favourite football team, etc.
