A virus isn't the only thing that can cause the issues the OP is having, it could also be a corrupt/damaged registry or file system

What about system restore?
If you have that turned on you could use it and it might fix things for you. Updates are very important!
Then I would make sure I have good virus and spy ware and firewall set up!
