Which games do you think were brilliant, and now have lost their shine?

The Call of Duty and Halo series are both games, in which the story line has fallen apart, are just FPS's which rely too much on online game play.

What are your guy's opinions? (:

I loved COD4, it was my absolute favorite game for a very long time, in my opinion it went downhill rapidly from there. It all swayed towards consoles from then on and they certainly made some serious money from the next load of games.

I had MW2 which was OK, then I bought Black Ops I made the mistake of buying it on release day! I think around 10 month s later and 8 patches or so it was actually playable and OK, then I made a massive mistake in buying MW3, I found it totally awful but thankfully created a new Steam account just for that game and was able to sell it on pretty sharpish.

I had BFBC2 which I found to be an excellent game, I then bought BF3 which again I found and still find to be an excellent game, the multiplayer is awesome.

I won't be buying the next COD installment.

The next game I am really looking forward to is Grid 2. I really enjoyed the first one, I got an xbox controller for Windows for it together with other racing games I play such as Dirt 2, Dirt 3 it works great.

I"m going to go oldschool on this one and say Command and Conquer: Renegade. The multiplayer in that game is still, to this day, the best I have ever played in an FPS game. It was an FPS MOBA well before DOTA even existed. When the judgement of what makes a game good started shifting more towards graphics and away from mechanics the game was quickly abandoned by its fans and forgotten. Most current gen FPS games generally have fantastic stories in their single player campaigns and have their multiplayer focus on simple "kill the bad guys more than they kill you" strategies, and seemingly most importantly, they're pretty. So when someone picks up CnC renegade all they get is 2002 graphics and a terrible campaign and think "wow, this is terrible". But they don't get to experience the amazing multiplayer experience of base vs base combat with two very distinct and tactically different teams protecting their resource harvestors and using their income to purchase character upgrades, vehicles, superweapons etc. And most importantly, Renegade is the only multiplayer FPS game I've played where entire teams HAVE to work together in order to win. If your team didn't time their attacks with the rest of the team, or support their fellow teammates, the entire attack would most commonly fail, the enemy would counter, and you'd be in defensive mode. This turned into a bit of a rant, but I just cannot express how great that game was, and how its virtually unknown now.

Think everyone will agree that COD was good with MW and MW2, and then it started just to collapse from then on; any one getting GTA V?

Yes, I am planning on getting GTA 5, of course there is not much info on it so far so I want to see what it's like first. I will most likely wait until its released and see how the reviews are.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect

Why do you think these games have "lost their edge"? Mass effect still has one of the most intricate sci-fi universes ever made. They're even making a mass effect movie scheduled for release this year with screenplay by the same guy who made Thor and I am Legend.

Similarly, Dragon Age has an extremely rich world and is also having an animated movie made about it.

I definitely think these titles are still very much alive.

I definitely think these titles are still very much alive.

I love both games, especially DA:O and ME 1/2.

But in my opinion, the 2nd Dragon Age just went off the rails from what it formely was qualitywise.
And Mass Effect was good untill the 3rd game where it just fell apart and made no sense (the ending) Even the animation quality was subpar compared to the first 2 games. ME3 all by itself makes ME1 plot pointless for example, at least to me.

Both titles were once good, but now more focused on selling DLC packs.

Just my opinion, andf I know some may disagree. But they both are just a shadow of what they were, or could have been.

Being a Solo player (Campaigns) and not a Multiplayer I think we have suffered more than some of you guys with plots and content.

I started playing shooter (duke nukem, Doom, MoH, CoD, any WWII war game was cooletc) then someone turned me into Tactical sims like Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six (this last one gave me a lot of grief because I was kind of use to the shoot'em up style) and I got HOOKED. The open world, the ability to move freely, to point your weapon where YOU wanted and NOT where they wanted you to point it. You really felt inserted in the game, the voices, what they were telling you would be confronted with, sometimes I even got cold when doing parts of the game in the snow :o. In short , the game, the plot was there and they allowed you to go do your stuff, they promoted being patience, cautious and they scolded you when you tried to rush by making you walk funny if hurt.

Now a days? nah, go ahead and be a Rambo and if you get hit we will heal you quicker than you can say "I'm hurt" so you can go ahead and do it again and again.

You will play the game but we will take care of you by guiding you where we want you to go (we don't want you getting lost), we won't annoy you by making the game difficult, oh no no no, we will take you by the hand and show you all the tricks on how you can finish the levels extremely quick, and to top it all off, we will send you in side missions to search for clues and/or flowers so you can level up and trick out your weapons because we all know how you love to show off to your friends and tell them how cool your weapons look

Game like Far Cry, Crysis were all by lost when the Dev houses were bought by the publishers or they started catering to the consoles.

BF2 was an ok game, BF3 was a linear as you can make it. Cut scenes are sometimes longer than the levels you play on

But I am ranting again so... yeah!

ME3 made ME1 & ME2 and ME3 "non-entities" for me. They so lost replayability that I tossed all 3 in the garbage. Total disdain for these games. Never happened before to games I initially enjoyed.
The developers tied characters to a series of games, to the extent where the last save game carried characters to the next in the series. You made many decisions that determined the course of these characters. Really drew you in. Very nice touch.
Then the ending of ME3 said, "Sucker!"
All of your previous decisions were rendered meaningless. That's my view anyway. Others see it differently.

I really enjoyed Diablo II series and was a hardcore Battle.net player on it. Of course, I followed the hype and bought Diablo III which is a big big letdown for me. Too many things ain't the same anymore, Diablo III is like a completely new game compared to Diablo series. But, that's just my opinion. I am still looking towards the new patch.

Next will be C&C - Red Alert 2, that was my favourite young time RTS game and I bought the Red Alert 3, I was very very disappointed again but I didn't even bother to install it now.

The publishers are laughing all the way to the Bank with our money because we are, indeed, SUCKERS!!! more so when we think that what we see in the ads and video teasers is part of the gameplay or how the game will be. They are also banking on the fact that some Franchises have done extremely good so they will milk the cow dry even if the game has nothing to do with what the franchise initially made of that game.

People keep buying their crap because they are afraid that if they don't, the Dev House and/or Publisher will go broke and they won't have any more games to play and their life, as they know, will also end. They don't understand that, as soon as Dev House and/or Publisher is dead, a new one will take its place and, if they are smarter than those who died, will start by making good games so they don't die as well. This publisher have been able to recognize the needy people we are and how afraid we are to changes that we rather be sheep and follow... sad state of affairs really.

Others? well, others just have more money than Brains and think that 50 cheeseburgers is just pocket change so they don't even care to buy it, toss it away if they don't like it, its unplayable or even installable and go back to the store and get another one... Mommy and Daddy told him he is a winner and he is entitle to anything and everything he wants because they love him so very much! :(

I won't even bother buying D3. Their DRM is a P.O.S and I want nothing to do with it. No singleplayer without internet? Well, you can say "bye-bye" to my money from here on out, because it looks like this will be part of their future games, too. And the gameplay/skill system sounds like absolute shit, too. The AH doesn't really appeal to me (as if I'm gonna use real money to buy items for a game. **** that.) They also seemed to turn D3 into yet another "spend hours upon hours item grinding just for 2 or 3 special items for a month before you get it." No thanks to that, too.

Dungeon Siege 3 turned out to be crap, too. The Need For Speed series went down the toilet after Porsche Unleashed, in my opinion. Same with Doom 3.

BF2 was pretty good, in my opinion. I liked that you could do the same thing in MP in SP. BC2 and BF3 didn't follow this line, which is kinda lame. I don't really care for a "campaign" in Battlefield. It was all about taking over the map, even in SP, and they gone and screwed it up (for me, that is). And then they had to go and make BF3 only work through a stupid website page. After I found that out after trying to play it, I said "Okay, you're getting deleted and put back in your box. BYE!" I'm not interested in playing my game through a website page. I want a direct .exe file into the game. The game's still sitting in my pile of games, not touched since the first time I installed it, and it's staying there.

Another game that kinda went into the toilet was the Carmageddon 3rd game in the series. "Carmageddon TDR2000" was a bit of a disappointment. No more humans...it's all zombies now *rolls my eyes*. I'm tired of zombies in games, they're overused and boring as shit. Try something else please.

The new Duke Nukem game didn't really appeal to me either.

A lot of the new games these days don't really endear me much anymore like they used to. Which is why I generally stick to the older PC games (and pretty much why I also haven't upgraded my PC in 3 years).

Excuse my stupidity but this means that you bought the game (they have your money) and then you didn't do anything about it... Win Win but for them, isn't it? :(

I mean, if that is the case and this was your first time and learn your lesson... welcome to the real world. But, if this is your modus operandus (it seems to be the case with the majority of the gamers out there) then, this is the reason why they are churning crappy games as of late... they have lemmings at their disposal.

(and pretty much why I also haven't upgraded my PC in 3 years).
Look at my Computer specs and tell me how old do you think it is? I'll give you a hint... I'm still using DDR2 memory! :D :p
