Gaming on Intel HD Graphics

First, my apologies for the noobish question, but I'm having some difficulty finding the information I need. I recently purchased a brand new Dell Laptop with the Intel Core i3 (with built-in "Intel HD Graphics" ) and 3Gb of RAM. I want to purchase GTA 4, but I'm reluctant to do so for performance reasons. I know there are some games that have been tested and even designed to work with Intel HD graphics (BioShock 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and many others). Can we run this game on this driver?

No. Unfortunately, Intel HD Graphics are not meant for gaming. You might though be able to play some of the aforementioned games on low settings with a bit of lag. GTA IV is quite a graphics intensive game and therefore requires a decent graphics card. The requirements state that at least a G41 Graphics Card is needed so you should be fine to play it on low settings.

Laptops as a whole are not a gaming designed system. They are designed for portability and usability while traveling, and being light. They are good for running certain applications and media, But certainly not games (Unless you wish to literally spend an arm and a leg! .) they just do not, and can not compare with a desktop in specifications/price ratio. Chances are you probably bought this with the intention for gaming, But I'm sorry to say it most likely will only be able to run games in low settings, if they run at all.

GTA IV is a CPU Intensive game the more core's you have the better it will run with less lag + requires a GPU with at least 1GB video memory to perform better and Intel HD Graphics are not meant for gaming and i would not suggest you to play GTA IV with the specs your laptop has GTA IV is a great game but it's also famous for the bad port on PC!

because its better .

Intel HD graphics are shared graphics. generally they dont have their own processor, and share the laptops ram.

A discrete or dedicated gpu has its own processor and ram, taking the load away from the cpu and ram.

you can get gaming laptops, but your looking at about £1400 for a decent one

Actually, decent laptops can come as low as $1150, like mine.

As for the question of whether Intel HD Graphics can run GTAIV, it can't, just like everyone else says. Mainly it's because the GPU has a different processing architecture than an actual CPU, which is where Intel HD Graphics is based on--it's built in the CPU. You need an actual dedicated GPU with corresponding GDDR RAM to make gaming feasable.

when it comes to laptops im a macbook man lol. i have windows 7 installed using parallels desktop, and i do actually get fairly decent gaming performance via it even though its an emulation lol

Integrated graphics rely on the CPU for generating graphics whereas dedicated graphics are independent. Therefore, there is less stress on the CPU. When playing a very graphics intensive games eg. GTA IV, your CPU will not be able to handle all of the excess processing.

This, plus it relies on your main system RAM for memory rather than its own which can be a significant bottleneck as well, especially if your system doesn't use DDR3.

gaming with intel graphics

your best bet if you want to game with your rig is to try out "ONLIVE" cloud based gaming. my wifes i3 17" hp with intel graphics will play Arkam Asylum just fine. other than that games a lot older than you want such as RB6 ravenshield. give it a try. also they just released video of thier new system (onlive) for tablets. YES
